Also how would i know if its dana 28 or 35 before i take everything apart

On a 1996 though, it should not matter, they are both exactly the same as far as anything external of the differential housing (and housing itself) is concerned.

In fact, if you do have a D28 on your '96, you'll likely still want to tell the (computer) slave behind the counter at whatever auto parts chain store you go to that you have a D35, because if you tell him 'D28', you are likely to receive parts for a 1983-1989 truck. This has been one of many persistent errors in their computer systems for nearly 3 decades (!!) now, and seems certain it's not going to be corrected. You can avoid this by telling them your 1991-1997 truck has a D35 axle regardless of what you have, and you should get the correct parts (the D28 wasn't used at all in any form under '91 & '92 trucks).

If one needs internal differential parts for a D28/35 "hybrid" axle, then the standard suggestion is to just swap the chunk itself for a D35 chunk, since putting any $$$ into that part of a D28 hybrid is generally wasted $$$. The chunk bolts right in (see again the above link) and you'll then have a true D35 thru & thru.
