you can do this swap with your sohc motor by running the sohc on an obd 1 harness out of a ex or ranger with the pushrod 4.0l. I think i've seen it done on an explorer over on serious explorations. i'd suggest using a 91 to 92 harness, as it has the least amount of sensors.

i raced an 01 mustang gt with mine and ran neck n neck with it up to 60 mph.

i was going to tech the other day and a chink had a deck out civic with a turbo or something... it was build up... any way he was really givvin it ever time we got a green light like he was on adrag strip... so i was like ok i'll go.. i wasnt even pinned and he was trying so hard his tires were squeeking each time he dumped the clutch... then i had to turn and he had to keep speeding past the college cop! and then the cherry and berrys went on and i was loughin my ass off!
