So saturday morning i flew to Traverse City, Michigan to pick up my "new" truck...
I was met by Clint and Becca Carter from Inner Air Lock, and they were awesome. Super nice people. They took me over to where Whopper Jr was parked, and let me just say, the pictures do it justice....
Here it is when i picked it up
Here are some interior shots
And the signed door panel by everyone on the UA 2009
Once we signed the papers and all the formal stuff, they had to take a picture for Petersen's, so they took a bunch of joking pics
After all the pics, it was time to hit the road. I didn't know what the truck was going to do, so I just took off. My goal was to make it 560 miles in 10 hours. I pulled out on the road and took off.
I wanted to take some pictures of the gorgeous scenery on the interstates up there, but driving and being a camera man are not my best qualities....
Once we got a little bit out of town, i opened the ol gal up to see what she could run on the open road.... Got it up to 80 a few times
Pulled off to snag this picture
From here on out, it was pretty routine. The truck had a terrible exhaust leak, no back window, no driver wing window, and the passenger window wouldn't go up all the way. With all the rust, it was just like a windtunnel in there. That didn't slow me down.
Every time i hit a bump, i would ask myself, "Is this the bump that the truck is going to rip into two (or more) pieces?" Ol' Whopper here stayed together though.
Here we are going past Grand Rapids and some more Michigan pics
Crossing into Indy
As you can tell, it was beginning to get dark, so no more pics. Although I wasn't able to take pictures, the good lord above decided he wanted to test the whopper too.... So he made it rain. Buckets of rain. Cornering at 75 in this truck with bald ass tires is more than enough to wake you up from the dull drone of the broken exhaust....
Once i entered Indiana, I was cruising down US31, which has a speed limit at 60, and sections of the road go through towns, so you are down to 25 in some places with stop lights. Right before Indy, there were construction. Lots of it. Enough to have 2 interstate exits closed, in which, both were ones i needed to get onto. Although this snag was thrown my way, nothing was stopping me from getting home now.
Once outside of Indy, i knew it was less than 3 hours from home, so back to the balls out again. Once i hit I65, the speed limit went back to 70, so i was all out again at 75-80 depending on what hill i was going up or down.
Around 1215 am i crossed into KY at Louisville. Louisville is 54 miles from home, but the first 20 miles are at 55.... So it was like teasing me... 9.5 hours huffing exhaust fumes will make it to where you don't care about laws... So i was barreling down I64 at the same speeds as before.
Pulling into my driveway was never so good as Sunday morning at 1250 am.
I had completed the trip. 560 miles in less than 10 hours with no radio whatsoever, no cigarette lighter to charge the GPS or Cell phone, in a truck people didn't think would make it around the block. The best part about the whole thing was the gas mileage! I averaged 14 MPG the ENTIRE trip!
Now that the trip is over, and we are back home, what are the plans???
Look on lexington craigslist and you will see... hahaha. Yes, the Whopper is back up for sale or trade. If you are interested, shoot me a PM.
