welding arc or mig? want to learn.

Millermatic 185 is a 220v welder, not 110v.

I have a Lincoln 180 (pretty much the same unit) and I love it.

i know they are millermatics and they are 110 , i just dont remember the exact size

and i believe everyone when they say you can setup an arc machine for mig , it is just we were never taught that in my course

exhaust oh yeah!! that would be the bomb. I would have all my sons vehicles and buggies to work on. then I can teach them to weld. gotta have somebody to help me when Im to old

If your only buying one, it completely depends on cash and application. I was able to live with just stick for years. When I picked up my MIG I can't believe how I lived without it. If I only could buy one, I'd by a 220v MIG.

So, if you wanted to get a welder, and only planned on getting one, what would you suggest? TIG? I've heard you can weld most everything with a TIG, but they are terribly expensive right? I'm confused, lol...

Tig welders are expensive. However with a tig welder you can weld almost anything and once you get the process down you will love laying clean looking beads. Theres alot more to learning Tig. Ive been using wire fed welders for a few years and Im just now getting into TIG. It takes alot of practice to lay nice stuff with a TIG your basically doing 3 things at once with a TIG vs just pulling a trigger on a MIG

Shear, tension and compression are standard terms to describe any joint and how the load affects the fastener, be it a weld or a bolt or any other type of fixation. Tension is when the fastener is subjected to a direct pulling load. Compression is when the load is pushing directly towards the fastener. Shear is when the fastener is subjected to a sliding type load. The real trick when designing something is to try to keep most of the fastener in a compression load.

you can set up a basic arc machine to include Tig,as long as it has AC/DC settings.wont be able to weld alum. thou.

I'd take acr over mig. I enjoy tig but I can't afford the equipment. I'm just running and old Marquette arc welder. Anything that is under tons of stress I alway go to arc but everything else I just oxy. I wanna save up for a Oxy-MAP setup. It's good for any light to mid welding jobs and brazing.
