welded 7.5 open?

thankyou rolin wot. you have made my mind not to wled. might i ask you and others tho. i found a 7.5 l.s.d on summit racing for 204 and i was thinking about getting it. my friend also tol dme if i got limited slip i can tighten the clutch engadment to get almost full lock but ill be screwed if one wheel lifts off the ground. and i do understand it will never fully lock.

weld it

and when/if it breaks do an 8.8 swap.

and fwiw-- for $204 i'd be hitting up a junkyard for a lsd 8.8 w/ 4.10's and disc brakes out of a 96+ explorer. spending 204 on the little 7.5 is A BAD IDEA IMO.

you make a very valid point. i respect evry ones input.i have loooked around and have yet to find a 8.8. just a couple open 7.5 like i have. im leaning hevely towrds powertrax iing it becuase its seems like a very sloid idea. if i was to weld it then would i have to tell the guy before hand to heat the gears to make a sloid weld and should i weld it to the carrier as well for added strenght.?
becuase i have herd it only would cost life fifty to weld.

i stated earlyer that i had made my mind up not to weld but with every response i flip flopp between that or powertraxx.

How much are lockrite's for a 7.5? It'd be better money spent than $204 on a LIMITED SLIP

weld it.
like 4.0 said,it's not worth spending money on the 7.5.
though you may not have found one,8.8s are very common, look to the explorer for a good one, though even the 28 spline car units i've found hold up pretty well.the rear in my 460/nitrous powered wheelie b2 has a diff from a lincoln and it holds up just fine(i really thought i would have snapped it by now)

to weld it,pull the carrier out, remove the ring gear and spiders, then (after cleaning)put the side gears back in without the thrust shims that are behind them.
weld all the way around the side gears, and let the carrier cool slowly.

reinstall the ring gear, throw the spider gears away, and bolt the unit back into the housing.the cross pin will still be needed to hole the axles and c-clip against the side gear.

and anyone gives you grief for playing with a 2wd is a pompous jerk.go have fun.

I welded the 7.5 in my truck and i beat the crap out of it drifting, its holding up but its still a 7.5. so i would weld it then get an 8.8 when you can

problem solved. a freind of mine has a foxback mustang with a 7.5 that he blew on it. so he bought a 7.5 28 spline full posi for it but shortly after buying it he decided to upgrade to the 8.8. so hes selling me his brand new in box posi unit for 50 bucks so i guess things worked out. i still think im going to weld my open and set it aside just incase.

would the same if I wanted to do it to my 8.8? I think it would right? But what about driving it in the rain or snow? I think your rearend would be all over the place? I don't care a load at all but live where it snows and man I wish I had a locker L/S anything.

i've heard both sides of that story... here in MS it don't snow so.... idk.
lots of folks talk about it and like it. so... idk.

Lincoln lockers have there advantages/disadvantages like all other things. They are not forgiving on or offroad and you have a c-clip axle. Onroad with the wheels broke loose not a big deal, bouncing up and down on rocks you will shit an axle shaft.

Lunchbox lockers while costing more than welding rods do a lot better at road manners. Off the gas they are locked off the gas they are open.

Performance will be the same between the 28 spline 8.8 and 28 spline 7.5 both have the weak point of the shafts. (8.8 run a 1050 vs the 7.5 has a 1040 according to some sources) Offroad the 7.5" has a weak everything and flexes just like a jeep D35 not worth building either of them. Weld it run it until it breaks but you better have a 8.8 ready to swap in because a heavy foot and offroading a locked 7.5 ends badly.
