Weird Factory Head Unit Issue

On my 1998 ranger the factory headunit/cd player has no display at all, weird part is if you boost the truck the head unit will light up again

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

If there is no way to fix it, will a newer 2000+ headunit work in my truck?

What do you mean by "boost"? Jumper cables? put a jumper wire somewhere?

Yeah when boosting the truck via booster cables (I've noticed this about twice now), the radio display will light up normally.

yeah a newer headunit will work. i installed my 99 hu in a 03. just plug and play.
