Way to go Ford....(sarcasm)

I have a solution for those of you who dont want it...buy an older vehicle. Or do what most of us do already and change what you dont like about your vehicle. Mod it!

When I was a teen I'd protest this as if it were my death sentence. However, now being many years older I now think this is an excellent idea, though I'd even go lower than 80mph.

I can't think of anytime I've had to avoid an accident by accelerating PAST 70 (as the one teenage interviewee mentioned), it'd take too long, long enough you'd be just as well off slowing down or stopping by the time it made it to 80. The only instance accelerating would help is low speed (25 or so) or stopped. Cars accelerate far faster from 25-35 than 70-80.

I'd make the cutoff 45 (most minimum posted highway speeds), and have it adjustable all the way up to the speed limiter.

MOFO ASS... HAHA you should go into legislation!

LOL~ I don't think people want me anywhere near a public office...I'd probably be as bad as what's in there...

Agreed~!

True...except when you're going the speed limit and trying to change lanes into a cutoff lane and there is a space ahead of the queue but nobody is letting you move over (this happens quite often)...speeding up to the front of the queue is necessary...and I've done this more times than I can count...esepecially if there is a merge from a previous on-ramp...braking in the center lane to get to the back of the queue could cause an accident...or set off a chain reaction that could lead to 'tricky situations" for other drivers...

And, if these 'governors' are anything like those on gas pumps where suddenly there is just a slow trickle when you get near the limit they can be extremely annoying...if they otherwise allow normal operation of the vehicle and accelerate rapidly to the cutoff point then they would be OK...

Guess we'll have to see what they can and cannot do when they are released...

Its a fine idea for teens i agree, but its only a matter of time till the goverment gets a hold of it and mandates it for everybody

Trucking industry has had the ability to govern since there have been trucks. All of my trucks are governed at 70 mph on the cruise and 72 on the foot. the government has had over 70 years to step in and say all trucks will be governed. hasn't happened yet but it will some day. international had a system that was in beta testing 4 years ago. they had a cruise control that could recognize the speed limit sign and adjust the cruise control accordingly, one day it will come to that. Don't like it but it will come to that.

I know when i was 16, half the fun of having my lincesne was blasting lynrd skynard and hauling ass down the road at 90mph.

<shakes head> I did it too so I can't say anything

I'm 17, got my lisence just over a year ago, And I think it's good, yet also bad.

I think the idea is good, I personally never break any of those limits, except maybe the volume one, so they really would not apply/ be limiting to me. I see no need to go more than 80mph other than a few areas where you will get run over if you are not going that fast (in parts of eastern Washignton, you'll see everyone doing 85-100mph down the freeway). Well, in my ranger I went 85+ once... It was snowy/ icey out... I was stopped and just gassed it, and I went 0-85 in probably 2 seconds, haha.

Although, I agree with others. I think the limits should be programable by the owner, not by Ford. For where I drive, I would not be able to drive less than 55mph (speed limit on single lane highway). Yet at the same time, there is no real reason at all to go over 60 except for passing. And even then, you hardly need to go much over that becuase when a car is going slow on that road, they are going closer to 35 or 40mph.

But the reason I see it as a bad thing is the possibility of where this all could go. Granted yeah, you'll probably keep your insurance rates low, but I think it will turn into a law, which would just be another way that the government controls us...

thats some serious f-ing b.s......

sounds like the mass nanny govt programming is well in hand.

ford in this case can eat a dick.

if....or rather, the people like me at that age when confronted with such a thing, we will just disable it anyway.

best thing to have is a recording device that reports real time if your that concerned with it... my kids have been driving for a few years now and the younger ones are or certified...i dont have any concerns.

i know i had cars with trap speeds of nearly 120 mph in my teens....useless to drive around sure, but fun.

this is just gay.:bsflag:

It is not misleading at all. The deaths are from accidents of course. The aren't old enough to die from advanced Alzheimer's. Simply put, this is what is killing them, this is why it's happening, this is how to curb it.
That's exactly what I said  The fact that teens have almost nothing else to die from makes it appear as if there's some sort of teen driving accident epidemic. Part of me thinks it's an OK idea if it's not mandatory but part of me doesn't want anyone interfering with Darwinism.

I agree that the parents should be able to set the limits to the cars. Where Ilive the freeway speeds are 65 in most places but what if the family takes a trip to another state and the youngs wanna drive a separate car so they aren't crammed? This is a good way to watch how the kiddies handle driving on the highway, makes for a less stressful ride for the elders and gives the teens a sense of freedom they always want. Most families i know that do this drive to Florida and that leaves us driving through the hills of West Virginia and Virginia where the speed limit is 70 and semi's definately come around u on the downhills like ur standing still to get the momentum to make it up the other side.
I wouldn't want my kids doing 80 around here all the time cuz when i reproduce they will be like me and they will do that at a young age, but on a road trip like that I wouldn't want them to stuck doing 70 in some of the 75mph areas we would have to travel through.
I grew up with cars, dad taught me how to cruise around the yard on the riding mower at 2, the farm tractor at 3, I started plowing our driveway at 10, learned how to do a propper burnout with line locks at 11 and was able to drive short distances alone at 13, (we live out in the boonies). His justification for this? When i reached 16, got my licence and got on the road myself I already had expirence in keeping safe distance from objects including other cars, I knew how to park, and when i decided to be a typical kid and show off doing a burnout i would know how to control it and not hurt me or someone else.
Oh and my first 1/4 mile pass on a track was at 16 right before i got my licence and I was beating the kids there 4 years older then me.

I've been hearing more of these kind of systems on the local radio. In my opion, screw this system. Sorry, when I drive, I don't want to feel like being on a leash. There was a chip that just plugged into the OBD connector and just recorded data. The parent can later view the data history and punish their offspring later. Quite evil.

One major problem with this. Almost 98% of all teens can not afford a new vehicle. So it won't work because that teen will be driving a mid-90 or mid-2000 vehicle and barely afford the insurance while they work at a grease burger just to make it.

You want something better. Cell-phones, make them hands-free a law.

Why waste your time governing it at 80? Most states don't even have that high of speed limit. Govern it to 45 or 50. If they are that young they don't need to be on a freeway, they could kill someone.

Otherwise have them buy their own damn car.

I live on a highway speed limits 55, in order to go somewhere I HAVE to go on the interstate. Speed limit 65.

Wanna be stuck behind me for 10 miles of 55 mile road in a no passing lane with my car only able to go 45?

I agree with Sparkdic about the teens driving a separate car. I did that with my family when we went out to western MA (2 hour drive) and they were able to watch me on my own, and I think that gave them some trust in my abilities on the road etc.

Just wanted to point out, that 80 is still illegal in every state i can think of. as far as Im concerned, no kid should be driving the family sedan anyway. They need to be in an old pos that tops at maybe 70. Look, I feel blessed to have been given my 97 2.3 ranger. When i got it it couldnt do over 72, my first speeding ticket(in a 60). If the family has one of these 09 vehicles, why would the teen driver be using it?

At my high school, I'd say probably at least 30-40% of cars in parking lot were less than 5 years old. Many Audis, VWs, Bimmers, and new spendy SUVs. It definitely depends where you live, and who else lives there. Then again as a sharp contrast there were a lot of old beaters and me and my buddies with our lifted trucks.

If a event like that happened, where you didn't want the speed limited, since you are right there along side them, all you would have to do is give the teen the "unlimited" keys (the ones the parents would normally use). Then there would be no restrictions. The car would not know that the teen has thier parents keys. They could easly swap their keys for thier parent's, haha that'd be funny. Show the parents what it's like to have a limited speed!

Here, at my school, there is a large diveristy of cars. Alot of old beaters, a bunch of lifted rigs, and alot of rich-kids who drive their parent's Lexus or BMW everywhere... I don't know if it's just me, or what, but it seems as though the kids who's parents buy them a new or almost new car, are the ones who are the reckless drivers, and the ones who this whole system is meant for. People like me, who drive a lifted truck, or all the kids who drive beaters, we know what the vehicle is capibale of, we know speed is bad, so therefor we limit ourselves. We don't need a stupid computer doing for us. But the rich kids, they DO need the computer.
