today I cleaned up the engine bay in my 92 sport a little by spraying some simple green and blasted it with the hose and wiped everything down. when I was finished I went in to go to the store and the voltmeter is down by the "N" in normal rather than in between the "ma" and the battery dummy light is lit up. none of the accessories seem to be slower nor are the lights dimming when I use anything. I shut it off and started it a few times and the battery doesnt seem affected at all. I even took the connections off the alternator and took the fuse for the alternator and sprayed some WD40 in there and put everything back and nothing. could it be that something got wet and it isn't letting it read right and it will dry up and be fine or did I mess something up? i'm having a total brain fart and don't know what else it could be.

Sounds as if you have checked most everything, Use your DMM and see if possibly your guage has bit the dust or attach a wire off your guage to another DC source and see if the guage reads right.(say a 9v )
