Video compression

Well i recorded a movie with my picture camera and its 8 mins long and over 500 mb, it is currently an avi, i am wondering the best prograb that will shrink it down to a smaller file size and keeping it in a video format.. If you know how to do it or want give me some tips post up please

xvid and divx are just different compression ratios for an avi file, i don't think that will help me yet. I need to reduce the fps and quality of picture i think
 
Did you try microsoft movie maker. It's pretty basic but is included on most versions of xp, might work for you.

here it is, its a little shaky do to the engine vibrations, i managed to shrink it down to a little over 60mb so thats a plus, It put my camera on my rc plane, i guess we can't embed videos on here.. i used a program called plato video converter, it works very smooth and take very little time at all to convert
