This happened to my brother in law a couple days ago. He was sitting at a light and a guy speeding on bald tires missed a curve and drove straight into him. He walked away but the truck wasn't so lucky. 😬

If that truck had 9 lives she just spent 'em all...

Good to hear your brother in law came out ok, I bet he was sore after that though.

Man, cocked the rear axle and everything. He got nailed good. I'm glad he walked away.

That really sucks. That looks like a really nice Ranger. Hopefully it can be useful to donate some organs 😂 to other Rangers in need.

When he got out, his first thought was the spring hanger on that side was broken... When he walked around back he found the spring had gone through the tailgate. 😮. It broke all the front suspension on that side

I told him I'd love to get the wheels from him - he told me the impact broke both wheels on that side. I'm hoping the insurance will let him have what's left of it because I could really use that cap and I wouldn't mind having a 4.0 and trans in the shed if my 3.0 ever gives up the ghost.

He said the guy who crashed into him came over to check if he was ok and he said "just don't come near me for a few minutes". 😬😂.

I can see the front wheel has a chunk out of it. If the rear wheel took enough of a hit to put the spring into the tailgate it probably isn't very healthy either.

Amazing both tires are still up.

RIP;

been there, it sucks. More or less told the lady the same thing

“Here’s your $3, go away”-Insurance company.

I’ll bet you could take the cap and the insurance company would not care, just tell them you have to get some of your stuff out of the truck before they send it off to auction. I took the radio, soft topper, and a few other things out of mine.

Insurance wont care one whit.. they are 10,000 mi away sitting behind a desk. They'll evaluate it from 1 single picture and then just take whatever the junkyard/auction gives em no questions asked... and the junkyard wont give you or them anything for anything extra on it.. .clean out everything you want from it.
My lady (with the civic) flipped her subaru and got sqaddo from it, they let her "gather her personal things" (everything was busted, even the CD in the player), so there was basically nothing to take. When I had my '95 (totalled from a 5mph airbag) go off to graveyard I even took the battery (it was 2 months old). I should have taken the 6 disc player, but I said any car I get after this will have a cd player so why would I bother...

I too am glad to hear he walked away pretty much okay.
I also agree it sure would be a good donor truck for those in need.

Yeah, if that cap is in decent shape, that should definitely come off the truck. That's a nice piece.

The engine and transmission is going to be a different story. You'll likely have to buy the truck back from the insurance company to get the drivetrain. But a good 4.0 and a good gearbox is worth having around. Best of luck!

That's almost exactly what my response would have been. He obviously took pride in that truck, an irresponsible person took it away, and insurance won't do crap to replace it with anything close.

I can empathize. I had a nice Miata years ago that I lost because I foolishly stopped at a red light. The person who rearranged my trunk figured it was more important to mess with their iPod rather than pay attention to traffic.

I was very unhappy.

Edit: after that Miata got totalled, I was able to go to the wreck yard and get as much off he car as I could. I was able to get my nice wheels, all my frame braces, and hardtop mounts. I was told that if I could carry it away, it was mine. Luckily the wreck yard was cool. Hopefully you can get some good parts off the truck if you don't decide (or aren't allowed) to buy it back.

I'm very sorry to report that I don't think I could be as nice as others are.

I've been thinking about it a lot.
I've come to the realization that I would have told the other guy that,
if he wanted to walk away that day he needed to give me a $1,000,000.00 in cash right then and there or start running. Because to me my truck is priceless.

Take a deep breath Doug...

Big deep breaths in progress Uncle Gump.
Counting backwards from 20 also in progress.
Visualizing beautiful girls on the beach in progress as well.
Self-talking telling myself to calm down and be nice in progress as well.

Can your brother in law sue the other person's insurance for the cost of a new vehicle?

Unless you were carrying Hagerty (aka collector vehicle ) with "replacement" insurance and "agreed upon value" there is no point in even trying. Agreed upon value will give you the value you and the insurance company say it is worth (and you pay a higher rate for that).

All the other insurance carriers just pay to replace it with "similar" which on a 30 year old vehicle is another 30 year old vehicle - aka nothing.

The limitations of Hagerty are rough though - no towing, no commercial use, no work (commute), pleasure use only, less than 2000 mi / yr. That said, my 1948 carries 10k agreed value and costs me 1/5 of the ranger. (All I use it for is fun stuff on weekends and parades.)
