Vehicle Inventory Survey

They're probably trying to figure out how much money they can make off of a "pickup tax"

I guess the mileage tax isn’t gaining traction so they are looking at other ways to suck us dry. Assuming you are correct.

I looked it up after I responded earlier. It looks legit.
So did Bernie Madoff and Elizabeth Holmes, something doesn't smell right.

No, you are legally required to respond to the Decennial Census, American Community Survey, and the Economic (business) Census.

I don't understand why people are so paranoid about the Census. The Decennial Census is used to count the number of people. That information is used for redistricting and apportionment. Federal funding is based on population. That's money for schools, road improvement, infrastructure, disaster aid, and many other things.

The American Community Survey expands on the Decennial Census. Through the information gathered in it we can correlate income levels and demographics. What kind of jobs (job sectors) people have, where people are commuting to and from to get to work, educational attainment levels, and other trends. The types of new vehicles people have been purchasing over the last decade has shifted away from cars to SUVs and trucks. I can only speculate that the ACS is gathering data to get a better view of the trends. The data is then released and is public, but depersonalized. Various government agencies can use the data for things like future planning. If the data shows more people and more cars, that means more funding for roads. Businesses and the general public also have access to the data. Just as an example, if you develop shopping centers and you are building a new shopping center where there is a disproportionately large number of SUV/truck owners you might consider making the parking stalls large enough to accommodate something larger than a go cart. If you are building a shopping center where there are a lot of senior citizens, maybe you add more disabled parking stalls. Or, charging stations for areas where there are a lot of electric vehicles.
Please don't ban me for this response....
I love the census. Had a great conversation with the Census taker who came to my house. We had coffee and carrot cake together
But,..
I wrote and deleted my real response three times before deciding on this...

In the end, do what you think is right. In the end I would toss this waste of paper into my fireplace.

I think they got swindled out of $80 billion in covid relief. They really need to figure out ways to make us pay for that blunder.

At the end if the day... anything about census data collection is always money related.

You mean the DMV? The DMV is a state agency. Typically, information obtained by the DMV is sold. Usually to the private sector, like data aggregators, insurance companies, etc. The Census isn't allowed to use that information, or information from the IRS in bulk if it contains personal information. The Census is required to do their own independent surveys. This is somewhat standard across most Federal agencies and that's the way it should be when personal information is part of the dataset. However, in some cases, an agency may be able to get that information from other sources if you fail to respond to the survey. Most commonly, they obtain the information through a proxy, which is most likely going to be a neighbor.
Some states, like Ohio, have a BMV, Bureau of Motor Vehicles instead of a DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles

here in Toledo Ohio a recent city council scam used "carrot cake" to facilitate B R I B E R Y

car dealers constantly check the DMV BMV for sales figures of rival dealers, the government doesn't need "census" data to screw us.

I keep getting crap from the USDA wanting to know what I have for livestock, how many tractors I have etc.

7 chickens, five tractors and the newest is a '53 model for 6 tillable acres.

I hope my survey does wonders for whatever algorithm they are trying to come up with. :icon_twisted:

A vehicle use survey you say?

Tell them you only use your vehicles for fornicating with their mothers. Then plead the 5th on any other questions.

I looked it up after I responded earlier. It looks legit.
I would pretend you didn't, and claim it looked like a scam if questioned about it again.
Next time put this kind of mail into the trash unopened.

Census - Do you ever wonder why the first two questions have a different background from the rest? Those are the only two you are legally required to answer. Yes, the un-elected officials have made some 'rule changes' that say all the others are required. Failing to answer the rest has only been prosecuted once, many decades ago, and unsuccessfully. Only once have I had a physical followup for the rest of the questions, and yes she popped up with 'the law says you have to answer. You can be jailed for not responding.' She wasn't happy when I told her the key words there are 'can be,' and it's only been attempted once ( back in the '40's I believe. )

I'll second the certified mail comment, and raise you a 'please contact the DMV for that information' if they do send you something certified. No chance of you using the wrong term and them trying to come after you for more money. My local property assessment is like that. Sends you a blank form to 'update', and hope you give them some ammunition.
