readin all of this has sparked my interest. i have a 98 that i wouldnt mind painting in the valspar oliver green. kinda a dull or a satin finnish...its durable too.

i love the way the pain looks on that oliver. tahts the closest way to describe how i want mine to look too. its really durable too from what i hear

I've used the Valspar stuff for a few years now. I have no complaints about it.

I have a quart of the Oliver green for a table I'm refinishing, figured it'd be a good color test because I was going to paint my workbenches with it.

I'm takeing it you prayed it? Okey, what kind of thiner did you use? And did you use any harnder? Allso I'm gueeing I'll have to prime as im goin to change color. From red/green doors etc,

Me?

Used a brush. Don't own a sprayer.

regular thinner.

haven't used it on anything yet that I would justify the extra effort/cost of hardener. Not that it is all that much. Thinking about it though I may pick some up tomorrow for the table just to play with it. Hell, the table itself was kind of an experiment already.

I always prime, use a good oil base.

I've sprayed a few cars over the years with tractor paint. At first it looks pretty damn good for the money, but even if you use the hardener with it the color fades after a year or two. I saw a pos Tempo I painted red in the junkyard maybe 3 years after I painted it. It was so faded it barely looked red anymore. My Cavalier z24 that I painted JD yellow also faded a little over time. My Ford LTD that I painted Ford blue didn't fade nearly as bad as the rest. The pigments don't seem to hold up to sunlight that well. Google "$50 paint job" and look for the Mopar site where the guy painted his 69 Charger with Tremclad (Rustoleum). It looks freakin' good! I'm thinking about trying that on my Aspire that has the clear coat peeling off and looks like crap.

Clearcoat would probably make a difference too, I do know regular JD is very good paint. With hardener and somebody that knows what they are doing it will look as good as anything.

My tractors are a little faded after 10 years (rattlecanned), but they sit in a lean-to that is open to the west so they catch a lot of sun and have never been waxed. I hit the one with a pressure washer twice a year, to get it clean for a show and to blow any salt off from pushing snow. Otherwise it and the other two only get baths when it rains.

The Oliver color is the shade I would use, but when I paint it I will probably use regular automotive paint. I am not sure how available the 1930's shade is without having it mixed up.

Going to be painting my truck with the Valspar "low gloss black" soon, going to be thinning it and rolling it on with a high density foam roller. I'll post pics of the results when I get it done
