V8 with a manual?

Depends on what you can find and what you know to what people end up using. A t-5 is great for a 4x2...not so great for a 4x4 anymore due to the lack of conversion pieces. A manual is really no harder than installing a manual, just sometimes takes a little more planning. I'm loosing the ZF in mine in the future. You can't make a factory 5 speed hold the power an automatic can. I already killed a C4, split the case. I scattered a clutch with the ZF, twisted the friction off a brand new clutch. A 302 and C4, C6 or AOD is a pretty common factory piece so people use it, I would imagine that would be why they are most popular. It's nice to have a stick to be different but my truck was much faster with an automatic.

I've heard the Jeep parts from a T5 can be fitted to the rear of the Ford castings. He could also just run a divorced unit. I know Toyota made some divorced cases that are a little more compact than something like a 205.

have fun trying to run a t-5 on a 4wd. youll need a hell of an adapter find...

I got a t5, if u look in my siggy theres a link and theres a pic o it in the truck, right now its 2wd but I am in the process of making a adapter in solid works so i can have one machined so it will hook up to my np 205.

When I do my V8 swap I'll be using an NP435...

Good tranny but three usable road gears and no overdrive sort of bites if you want to drive your truck on the road much. The low gear is only seldomly necessary and can be gotten along without. Especially if you have a V8 in a Ranger-sized truck.

If you are going to be heavily offroad based any of the old 4 speeds are good or the ZF 5 speed. They will hold the most power as well. The R2 speed will do ok on a DD/mild off road rig but none of them are performance oriented. The T5 is possible but getting harder to do because of the lack of adapters available. I am going back to an automatic, my truck is faster, more fun to drive and more reliable that way.
