My credo
If you expect the worst and hope for the best, you're already planning for failure.
So I recently picked up a newer dash piece for the driver side that included a new headlight and dimmer switch. The originals in my truck were severely in need of some updating and the plastic screw bosses were completely blown out (they used machine screws with nuts all they way through the dash to hold the switches in and JB Weld on the backside). My current query is with the newer dimmer switch. My original has 6 wires in the connector and this one has 4. I have tried to search wiring schematics to determine the difference, but am coming up with more questions than answers. Can any one shed some light here? Can I make the swap or do I need to try and reuse the older switch? Wanting to be sure before I begin butchering a wiring harness and making the issue worse.

By dimmer switch, you are talking about the multi-function switch? In other words, the turnsignal switch?

What years are we talking about? Your original 1996 has 6 wires? What year is the one with 4 wires?

P.S. I just thought, are you talking about the dimmer in the headlight switch for the dash lights? So the complete headlight switch plug wiring?

Ok so I'm not sure you're catching on to what I'm asking. Next to the head light switch is a dimmer switch that controls the brightness of interior illumination as well as the dome light. It is a separate switch located in parallel to the head light main switch. The multi function switch would be considered the "turn signal" switch on the column. The dimmer and headlight switched have separate connectors. I don't know the year of the one with the 4 wires as it was included with the dash panel I purchased from eBay and the listing just said what years it fit, not what it came off of.
