So this spring my engine overheated for the first time ever. It just wouldn't circulate coolant. So after attempting (unsuccessfully) to replace my water pump i just said screw it and put in a 180 degree tstat. This allowed coolant to circulate again but had the nasty habit of warming up then cooling off suddenly. It still ran just fine but two weeks ago my belt started to squeak like it was wet so i stopped and it was literally peeing coolant all over. Its coming from right in below the Engine Coolant Temp sensor and its plain as day but the Quiksteel i used to try to patch it (i knew it wouldn't last) just busts right through it (the coolant i mean) and now everywhere i go i have to stop to put water in my radiator and im sick of it. I drive a 98 3.0L Ranger 2wd thats been through hell and back.

If you did not get the water pump replaced, you will never fix the problem.... Now if you did get the pump replaced you may have and are still experiencing problems with air pockets. If you notice the top radiator hose goin over the alternator is the highest point in the cooling system. In order to fill the syatem will out air pockets you have to turn your heater on and run the engine until the T-stat opens without the radiator cap on then top of the coolant. The air pockets also cause the up and down in engine temp particularly when the heater is use.:icon_thumby:

thanks but would i have to replace the whole tstat housing or can i by just the piece that the engine coolant temperature sensor piece plugs in to (the aluminium piece)

confused???

I am wondering why you failed in replacing the water pump???

You shouldn't have to replace the water neck unless it is cracked or broken. Just the thermostat and the gasket.
