would there be any way to up the power on an old 85-87 diesel ranger? would swapping in a bigger/and or better turbo help? or should i not waste my time..i can get a diesel ranger probably for free if not dirt cheap from my step dad, and decided this truck would be ideal for me while i'm off to college.

Your better off making the intake and exhaust more free flowing.
Clean injectors and good cooling system maintenance...that sorta thing
If you try to get much more out of it, parts will break and you won't be able to find replacements
 
Yeah... but then you break it and decide a 7.3 powerstroke is in order!

If you get it running good I would just leave as is, your using the truck for awesome mileage not awesome racing... besides even souped up i doubt it would be too much faster
 
very true..once the engine shits, i think a nice v8 is in order :headbang:
 
If it's not smoking black then it has enough air to make more power by turning up the fuel. There's no point to trying to get more air into it if you don't have any more fuel available. So the first thing you have to do is figure out how to turn up the fuel.

Once it is making a little black smoke, it's using up all of the air. Then maybe worry about upgrading the turbo.

Then there's the problem of combustion heat. It's a 23-1 engine and not really meant for much boost. I'd want to know how much it's making and what the turbine inlet temperature is. About 10psi is the limit without an aftercooler. And probably you shouldn't run that engine over 1,000*F.
 
Turbo's start to melt when your egt's break 1,200........... especially for extended periods.

I would get it running in good order and drive it till it dies, sell the engine to a ranger enthusiast with the other half of the engine, then do the only logical thing you can do.

Put in a modded 4bt (a 7.3 or a 6bt or a d-max are all going to be a heavy and tight fit)
no reason for a few hundred in proper turbo and injectors.... I'd advise a set of Fast Track Enterprise injectors, and a hx 35/40 hybrid turbo...... you don't need an Industrial Injection 66/71 like I was running haha.

after owning the diesel........ you would never be satisfied with an 8mpg v-8 again.
