trying to change my pick up coil

That sucks when you pay for a professional and get a retard.

More in question than the competency of the shop is their integrity. I moved here a few years ago and they spotted a sucker a mile away. After working on it myself the past 5 months I have found that many of the other repairs I paid for weren't actually done and likely simple easy fixes were turned into a large charge. This last experience was, in my mind, blatant sabotage. I have experienced it in a lot of other ways since moving here that I won't go into. They don't like or trust outsiders and I don't blame them. Like I said, I have no regrets. I'm glad it motivated me to try and learn to do it myself.

Any ideas why it is impossible to screw the distributor hold down bolt in? It gets hung up about half way in and absolutely will not budge.

You don't have the dis fully seated. You should be able to feel the ridge around the shaft is seated right against the block. If it isn't the bolt won't go in.

So Asheville huh. My wife has some family there.

Figured it out. Lost the piece that actually holds the distributor in place when I removed the bolt. I didn't even know there was one and was wondering how screwing that bolt in held the distributor in place. So, now I know that. Gosh what a frustrating roller coaster ride of success and failure...kind of fun to be honest.

Yeah, we've lived just outside of Asheville in the sticks for 2 years in December. I'm originally from Utah, lived in Colorado for 4 years before moving here. It's nice, I'm still adjusting. Is your wife's family from here or did they recently relocate and what are their thoughts?

OK, ended up replacing the distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires...started right up but runs like complete shit. I'm guessing that's the timing issue so I'll revert to the advice about finding TDC#1.
