True Duals Cat question...

I think just to be easy to please I might have it Y-piped after the cat. Also, does anyone know off by hand what O2 sensors are worth? I might replace mine, as its stuttering. I'll show y'all. Im starting a new thread titled "Idle dilema" if you know anything, head over there and help me out!!! Thx :icon_twisted:

I replaced my o2 sensor shortly after i got my truck, and round here in Pa, they cost round roughly 50-60 bucks $US

You live in Canada man!!! No need to run any cats at all if you don't want to! I've been running a straight pipe ( no cats no mufflers) for over 2 years now and have never had any legal issues as a result.

Yes, your right, I wouldn't have any legal issue's it needs no saftey. (police cannot check and/or write you a ticket for No cats as they are not qualified. If a cop asks to check your exhaust or pop your hood, or even try's to write you a ticket for no cat's ask for their Journeymans mechanics papers. thats how it goes here, dunno if its same for al-bert-o)
However, adding duals with straight pipes decreases my market for selling it by a lot. Im pretty much down to 16 year olds and zepplin wanna-be's. If I want to make money at all, ill have to queit it a bit, and cutting the cats would kill my milage. Personally, I would prefer to get some headers and run it off that. But, i'm not sure. recent problems have halted any forward progress on the dangermobile, and have started to focus on making it function. gas line antifreeze seems to have done the trick. still having idle issues though.

i cant speak for the laws in canada, but in the US, federal law prohibits tampering with or modifying emissions devices in any way. this means that if your truck came with a y-pipe running both banks through one cat, thats how it MUST remain. removing that single cat and replacing it with two cats...which would pass a tailpipe sniffer test, BTW...is "technically" illegal.

that said, im running true duals with 2 cats on my truck. i dont have emissions testing or inspections in my area, but i can only hope that if anyone decides to make a fuss about my system, the fact that i installed cats will at least account for something.

FYI, you will want to run an equalizer pipe of some sort (h-pipe or x-pipe). going without will cost you power and give the truck an annoying "dual 3 cylinder" sound to it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "dual 3 cylinder" But i have an idea. I dont want it to sound like a v8 wanna be, just be louder than the fan/intake when excellerating. plus i have a leak to deal with anyways...

he means 3 cylinders left side then 3 cylinders right side, kind of like having two chevy metros w/ pipes running side by side, annoying as hell. try the 2 in 2 out cat and go from there.

I think I know what you mean now. I'd love to try the dual in dual out thing, but like I already said No work can Be done right now as all my money is currently going into figuring out whats the deal with my Idle. Seems to be that the Fuel pump may be going, or REALLY clogged filters, or hopefully just a vaccuum line leak. Unfortunately It hasn't recieved much attention, as the garage is currently full of mopar stuff.(JUNK) Once there is room i will have it in there and hopefully apart. does anyone know of a common problem with these symptoms?: Runs well cold, but once it is warm at all, it will every once in a while, idle very rough, and surge, and this lasts a few seconds, or up to a couple minutes, but if i let it idle for a bit, it struggles then revs up and idles fine. It goes good for a few minutes then repeats. I dont get it.

go under the hood and pull the line to your iac when it does it. and another thing is your air conditioner on? the pull on the engine off and on will do that when the compressor kicks on and off.

umm, picture? i can send you an under hood shot and you circle it... or something... and its not a/c. its like freezing friggin cold here, and its never on, and there's no way in hell the a/c could do that. It will just sit there idling, then start surging real bad. it dips to like 700 RPM, then up to like 900, then down to like 650, then back to 900 then to about 550, then up to like 700, then to like 450, and its almost stalling, all the way to like 400, then rev up to like 1500 and return to normal idle. After a few seconds it will sometimes repeat this, and when I drive it will bog real bad, then when I let off the gas and hammer on it it will have power again.
or, it will go normal and drive fine. i DONT KNOW!!! ARG!!!

your a/c cycles when the vent selector is on defrost.

the IAC solenoid is a small, cylindrical valve on top of the intake with a 2 wire connector going to it.

Thanks a lot:icon_thumby:
Just curious, if a plug wire or even 2 were loose, could i see similair symptoms?
We took the plugs out and compression tested them at school, and since then it feels more powerful and hasn't stuttered. However, I havent driven it too much...
Is 150-155 (compression) good for 2.9's?

when it comes to the cat. if you want to do away with it but still pass a visual inspection there are a couple things you can do. The first thing is to pour gas in the cat and set it on fire wait till it goes out whack it with a hammer a few times and the stuff inside will crumble and fall out. The only thing i dont like about that is the hollow cat acts like a expansion chamber. The second trick is to get a piece of pipe that fits in the cat and punch it through. Looks like a cat flows like a straight pipe. Depending on the area you live in and the year of your vehicle, most places just do visual inspection. In my area they dont do the sniffer test on any car older then '05.

you want it to sound good? put true duals on it with 24" glasspacks 2 1/4" pipe. keep you O2 sensor and the pipe its threaded into and have them weld it on as an equalizer. its perfect. your gas mileage will not suffer as much as getting rid of the sensor AND cat. n if u dont want it to be too loud, get glasspacks bigger than 18". or get some flowmaster knock-offs. such as the V-Force mufflers. you want tone, get some mufflers. if you want cackle, get glasspacks. the smaller the pipe, the more back pressure you have and the more it will cackle. the bigger the pipe, the more tone it will have and also less back pressure. not enough to amount to anything though.

Wow that was actually informative! thanks a lot. Now, question is, are you suggesting i just have an 02 on only one pipe?

In Canada it is illegal to tamper with emissions equipment. You cannot remove a functioning catalytic converter from a vehicle that came factory with one. If you ever get pulled for an MVI they can and will fail a vehicle for not having a catalytic converter on it.
