tinkerers are always swearing, therefore something that is worthless is not worth a tinkers damn

yeah, I'm that old

My understanding of a tinker is about 100 to 200 or more years ago there were people who scavenged and fixed pots and pans and tried to sell them house to house. The packs of articles, particularly pots and pans hung on the outside of the pack horse or cart would bang together, making "tinkling" sounds as they traveled. Because they were poor and had a reputation for bad repairs their wares "were not worth a tinker's damn"....
Now I have to go check Wickepedia to see if my memory is any good...lol.
Edit; not close...lol

"And the thread drift continues..."

You are correct, and in addition they made homemade tools and knives of very high quality.

Several Louis L'Amour westerns mention tinkers and their knives.

L'Amour was known for really accurate portrayal of the US western culture in his books.
