Troubled 1998 AWD Explorer

I bought my wife this truck, and when you let up on the gas sometimes it will make a whinding noise ( starts loud and goes away as your stoping or turning ), but if you give it gas the noise goes away but then there is a clunk from under the truck. All u-joints are good, tires are all matched. I have asked everyone in my area including the guy that built my race car trans. Is there anyone out there that has had this same problem??? It's driving me nuts looking for it.

Sounds like possibly a worn gearset. The coast side of the gears could be worn. Otherwise, possibly something in the transfer case. Not too keen on the AWD versions.
