I have a '94 4.0 Ranger with a 4.0. It's all original, including the clutch, with 160,000+ miles.

Recently, the past week or so, I've experienced difficulty shifting, especially from neutral to 1st or 2nd. It seems fine when cold, the first 10 min on the way to or from work, then it gets progressively worse. When moving it's easier to shift but not as smooth as normal. Checked the clutch fluid, it's full. The truck will roll freely wile in gear with engine running & clutch in. Shifts fine with engine off. Rolls freely with engine off, in gear with clutch in.

Thanks for any help you all can offer

Time for a new clutch. It would shift nice when cold, then get worse. I confirmed it when i got stuck in a deep puddle. As soon as i got in deep enough for the clutch to be under water or partially submerged, it started shifting like it was new. 1st to reverse to 1st to reverse againg and again with no problem. Also, when mine got really hot, I could feel it trying to make the truck go forward with just the syncros.

It is a warped clutch disk or spring plate or messed up throwout bearing. No matter what it is, you need a new clutch.
