transparent diff covers

I just googled it and I believe it was the 3rd or 4th one down that it showed 125. If I am not mistaken it was in a ford forum. Also, 85_ I PMed him and he told me that is cracked after sitting for 2.5 years. I am going to NY, so I would amagine that the salt would take after it quite hard and kill it, not good.

some one on ranger-forums has one and it started cracking

I read that post not long ago, was stress/heat cracks forming from the boltholes. From my understanding, the only time they're really able to be seen through is when setting still. The fluid churning makes it virtually impossible to see through.

Skip them go with a Ruffstuff cover. Dan not only supports this forum but gives a discount (code: Ranger) and has the cheapest strongest cover out there.

The clear gearz covers dent easily. then the gears dig into them and can rip/open them up.

for wheeling i the ruffstuff cover looks awesome. i think im going to go with the clear since i got a 2wd rig that doesnt go off road.

I don't do that much heavy riding so it would work just fine for me. As far as the chrome goes, chrome sucks, not a fan, hell, I would like to murder out my truck if I could, but the gold looks very shape with the stepside. I was thinking about going camo with it on the rocker panels and bumpers as well.

salt killing plastic iv never seen that and im from freaken CANADA!

The salt that is used is a stronger form of sodium and is used to soak up and dry just about anything, it'll even seize up your engine! So this on plastic that has the amount of pressure and heat and then cooling processes, will eventually start to deteriate the integrity of the item that it is on. It's science 101 hommie!!

Zman has one on his truck.

Zman HAD one. It was the cleargearz cover, about 1/8" thick. Had it on his street truck. When we did his new gears, went to put cover back on, it was cracked in 3 spots. Where the flat flange meets the curve. And it WASN'T overtightened, didnt even require a ratchet to take it off.

im starting to rethink my plan to buy one of these after hearing about how many have been broken. you would think that it would last awhile since the factory ones are plastic too.

Polycarbonate (Lexan) is plastic. There are many different types of plastics that fall under a generic term of polymers. Polycarbonate is very strong and is used in bullet proof glass. That does not mean it is resistant to everything. It stress cracks easily and is susceptible to degredation by many solvents. I don't know how it stands up to oils. It has a much higher thermal expansion than metal and I suspect that contributes to the cracking from stress as the differential housing heats up and cools down. Holes in polycarbonate are a main source of stress cracks. I am not aware of polycarbonate being attacked by salt in any form.
