Transmission Swap 94-96

I just bought a transmission from a guy and it came from a 1996 Ford Ranger 2WD with a 4.0l. My truck is a 1994 Ford Ranger 2WD with a 4.0l will the transmission that I just bought bolt in the exact same as my current one also if anyone has any tips for removing and installing the new transmission that would be helpful thank you! The 93-94's use a worm gear for the speedo cable, I'm just concerned that the 96 may have the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) instead. This would be the only difference but could be a deal breaker for installation, no speedo cable.

EDIT: After looking at the pics of the transmission it looks to have the VSS but someone more knowledgeable should chime in on this to be sure.

That sensor just comes out and the speedo cable will go in it's place fine, same gear and such just a sensor instead of a cable...

The main issue is I don't know when it went from being an A4LD to a 4R44 or whatever, pretty much if you look at the electrical connections and if they are the same then I believe it should work.

Hi I posted a separate thread yet no responses yet I was hoping I can get some help here. I’ve been frustrated trying to figure out why my torque converter won’t seat in all the way it’s suppose to go inside past the bell housing right. I need help it’s not flush with it quite yet and the splines aren’t stuck or anything and it’s centered up when taking it out

Sorry to come in late, but the 1996 automatic won't work in a 1994

1994 has an A4LD with 2 solenoids
1996 has a 4R55E with 6 solenoids

Just look at the wiring connector in front of the shifter
A4LD had 3 wires
4R55E has/needs 13 wires/16 pins

Internally they are the same transmission, but the valve bodies are different
1994 60-wire computer can't run the 4R55E
And can't be changed to a 1996 104-wire computer

So sell it and find an 1988-1994 A4LD



Torque converter just rotates and should slide in 2 or 3 times as it lines up with pump and input shaft splines

IF....input shaft fell out it may have been put in backwards, it looks like it doesn't matter but it does, it slides in farther when it's in the right way

If it doesn't slide in all the way then something is wrong, pump could already be broken

We finally got the transmission removed last week the transmission seems to look the same and it has the two electrical connections are you sure it’s not going to work it also looked like it would line up with the flywheel and flex plate and if what you guys are saying is true arr you sure there isn’t anything I could do.

They are the same transmission internally and externally except for the solenoid plug in on drivers side
And the 1994 will have a vacuum hook up on passenger side as well, the 1996 will not

The valve body has the solenoids that control flow of ATF to clutches and bands for shifting
1994 just had 2 solenoids
1996 has 6 solenoids


Maybe someone has done a conversion, if so I have never read about it
And just rebuilding the 1994 A4LD would be easier, which is why a conversion wasn't posted anywhere
