hey, i was wondering how transmission guys get into their field. are there schools or apprenticeships for this? i have been working on my transmission a little bit over the past few days and have been reading a ton. I'm really interested in learning more and maybe making it my profession. plus i like the fact that you can work on the side(if i had a dollar for every car i sold cheap because of a bad transmission(which was probably an easy fix) id have 11 dollars by now haha)

Automatic trannys are covered in the 4th year of an automotive apprenticeship.

school

Hey I have been primary rebuilding heavy equipment and over the road transmission's I went to a 1 year college in minnesota, as a heavy equipment mechanic I got right into the field even before school was out, but just remember you need to be able to move to the job or you may have a slow time advancing up the chain

Did the college degree in automotive tech back in the late 80's The course on auto transmissions was quite informative, but I'd recommend asking local transmission shops about programs to increase the knowledge gained. Much of what gets covered in the books and general 'rebuilding' fails to take into consideration KNOWN issues that each type of transmission has. (such as the first model of transmissions used in the escorts and lynx cars suffered from porous housings, and they never covered the method used to discover it. Our instructor had worked for a dealership and gave us the inside scoop)
