Transmission Removal Question

I'm in the process of timing cover gasket replacement and now I need to replace the oil pan gasket. (2002 3.0 4wd Auto) I've dropped the front axle but still can't get the pan all the way off. I've been told you can loosen the transmission bolts and slide the transmission back a half inch or so and get the pan off.

I need help on what to do to slide the tranny back? Do I have to disconnect the transfer case? Unbolt the cross member? I've got a factory manual but I feel it has me taking half of the truck apart. Are there any tricks to doing this?

I've tried to get the old gasket out around the oil pickup with no such luck already. I thought I may be able to snake the new gasket in there.

Any help is appreciated.

Never tried it on an '02 3.0l, but wouldn't think sliding back transmission 1 inch will do it.
Is it the trans or the Flywheel that is in the way?

Sliding trans back doesn't move the flywheel.

If you need more room to remove the oil pan then raising the engine that 1 inch might be a better option.

I don't know how much stuff you have to remove to slide the trans back. I would guess it would be a lot less than if you were taking it out.

BUT!!! I do know that you have to keep the torque converter back and completely seated into the transmission at all times or you will be replacing the transmission due to a broken front pump! In other words you cannot leave the TC bolted to the engine.
