transmission interchange

which transmissions will work in a 91 ranger 2 wheel drive extended cab with the 3.0 engine it has an automatic now .i want to switch it over to a manual trans what donor vehicle do i need to find to do this swap.

3.0 m50d, the bellhousings do not interchange, you must have a tranny for a 3.0. if you have an a4ld or 4r44e auto they are the same length and bolt pattern as the m50d and are for the most part a direct swap. be sure to get a 2wd donor vehicle if its 4wd youd have to mess w/ a transfer and dif driveshaft and gearing issues w/ the rearend etc. 91 up 2wd ranger w/ 3.0 engine or explorer should work w/ little problems, just be sure to get the pedal assy steering column shifter and computer (to avoid torque converter lockup codes) along w/ your master cylinder as well. i will be attempting the same swap in my 93 i have everything but the computer (im doing a megasquirt anyway) and the trans itself.

An Explorer will not work... Never came with a 3.0...

Hence me saying "Explorer?" in reply to his post. I have never even heard of someone even conceiving the thought of an Explorer coming with a 3.0 so it seemed kind of funny when he said it.

I figured as much... I just didn't want the OP to bring home a 'Sploder and it not work...

i said sploder cuz a friend of mines had one, then i remembered he swapped it in when his 4.0 blew...my mistake.

Tell him to join the forum and post some pics! That is definitely something I have never seen before and it sounds pretty cool. Although if I was doing a motor swap to an Explorer my motor of choice would be a 2.3 turbo.
