ok i have a 1997 ranger, 4.0 L, transmisson model 5r55e, when i ran an OBD test, it said to replace the speed sensor, which i did, but that didnt fix the problem which is:
truck runs fine, when in park/reverse/neutral, as soon as i shift in to a forward gear, the engine dies. it will drive in reverse, but in any forward gear it studders and dies, i can get it to drive in D but it is real jerky and dies after a few feet, and takes some hard gassing. any idea what could be causing this problem?

Is the parking brake OFF?

real funny... she has enough torque to over power the parking brake, which my girlfriend demonstrated a while ago.

Try driving in 1 gear and 2nd gear and the tranny might be caught in a high causing the engine to stall ,just a manual when your in a high gear and stall the engine

it works if i shift it up through the gears, but still wont g o directly in to drive, with out dying, looks like those pricks down at the transmission shop are gettin the credit card number, and having a field day.

Its your torque convertor lockup clutch solenoid, either your solenoid is stuck, bad or malfunctioning...mine did the same thing, I had to shift from park to neutral, then straight to 1st gear, otherwise it would die. Once in 1st, and you start rolling, you have to manually shift the trans to 2nd, then 3rd, also when you come to a stop, if you dont downshift to 1st, it will die...I had some water get into my trans from a wheelin trip and it started having this problem...Hope this helps you:icon_thumby:
