I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0l auto 4x4 extended cab. It has 181k on it and since I got it it always had a clunk when it shifted from first to second. Yesterday taht clunk turned into a grinding noise, sort of like grinding gears in a manual. It will also make this noise if I put the truck in first and hold the gas and brake at the same time, it will be fine until the revs get up to about 3k and then it will slip and grind. I'm pretty sure it's not the axle since when I put it in 4 wheel it will still make the noise with the brake check. And if it helps at all it also slips a little in second gear. If anyone has any ideas I'd like to hear them. Thanks in advance.

Bad news bro: Your tranny's in need of a rebuild.

Now MIGHT be a good time to swap in manual as well. Sadly, Ranger auto's are notoriously weak.

Well I'm not really looking forward to the work of rebuilding it or swaping to a manual, so I'll probably just do a swap from junkyard, the stock one made 180k so it had a good life. I was just wondering if it was a known proble with an easier fix.

The stock one made it 180k and you're calling it weak?

That's my response to when my friends make fun of my Ford. I just bring up all of the chevys in my family that have had trannys and rears at 110k to 120k
