Hello,

Im here scratching my head trying to figure out which fluid my 2000 ford ranger 2wd takes. Online ive read that its Mercron V and its stated in the owners manual. But when i check to see if its compatible on advanced, Oriellys, Autozone and even Fords website they all say that the Motorcraft version of the mercon V is not compatible with my transmission. But they all say that the valvoline version works and walmarts supertech mercron V is fine as well. also a side not i drained and refilled the tranny with the motorcraft mercron V and its slipping like hell. so if anyone could explain why the oem recommend fluid isnt compatible with my truck i would greatly appreciate it!

The fluid in question

Transmission: 4R44E

Fluid that is compatible according to the parts store

isnt the valvoline one just made to meet the standards of the motorcraft one?????

yes there is a spec. spec not necessarily working out in the real world and sometimes you step to something else. ford internally made spec swap changes and i do not recall those details right now.

i was using the valvoline and walmart stuff.

Yeah i think ill flush all the mercron out and refill with the valvoline and see if it stops slipping. Because when the fluid is cold the truck drives great the minute it warms up its slip city and no engagement of gears. and i just finished rebuilding it and pressure tested all the drums and adjusted everything to spec. Its almost as if the fluid is turning into water and the tranny is building no pressure when its hot.

i would suspect an apply issue....bad seal or cracked piston in that case. could be the ol valvebody gasket/tq.... the newer fluids are even slicker.
