I'm trying to decide whether I need to install an auxillary transmission cooler or not. This winter I'm going be towing a double snowmobile trailer (about 2000 lbs) with my 2003 4.0L auto 4x4.

I understand heat is what kills transmissions, but seeing that I'll only be towing in the winter (temps are usually around 5 F here), is one really needed? I have read that an auxillary transmission cooler could actually over cool my tranny in the cold temperatures.

I could see myself needing one if I lived in Arizona and it was 100 F out.

That wouldn't hurt a bit for it to have another trans cooler. I put an extra one on my explorer after the first transmission started to leak at the front seal (due to being overheated) and have not had any problems since. I just added it in line with the stock cooler.
