tranny question

I have a 93 STX 2wd 4.0 auto trans. my truck is making a whining sound starting from about 30 mph to about 50mph then it quiets down but its still there. it also goes up and down with engine speed, thats why i think its the tranny. i would like to know what this damn sound is please or what it could be?

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe your tc is shot and the lockup clutch lessens the noise when engaged, then when you accelerate the clutch dis-engages, the torque converter begins to slip, and the noise grows louder?

maybe but its there when crusing as well.
