This is going to sound completely stupid. But I recently lost the reverse band in my Mazda.

I found a tranny for 100$ so I didn't pass it up. After pulling out my stock 5R55E I realized that i had purchased a 4R55E. Now I know a lot of people swap the 4R55E with the 5R... But what about vise versa? I realize that if I do so I obviously won't have 5th... But I'm out of money and between jobs.
Would it work? At all? I know it will bolt up obviously. But will I run into any problems? Will it work enough so I can drive it for a few months before I do a 5.0L swap?

Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Craigslist has lots of trannys

While I would normally agree with you, I dont this time. This is kinda an oddball that he will just confuse himself more by reading too many posts that dont lead to the right answer. :icon_cheers:

To the OP:
Long story short...Go get the right trans, it will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Yeah...that's my fault I could have swore it was in the Tech Library. Maybe I read it some where else.

Sno, I would agree, go get the right transmission. BUT, sometimes desperate times lead for desperate measures. If people swap up I would assume you could swap down. Wouldn't logic dictate this?

It's a terrible idea honestly, but let's pretend he has 12 kids and this is the only vehicle available and he doesn't have time to resell the transmission...

Do we know what motor this 4r tranny came off of?

sometimes desperate times lead for desperate measures.

There are a few differences between how the 2 are controlled.
The EPC solenoid is different.
The OD band is stronger (its used for the "new" 2nd gear and OD now).
The wiring is different.

Theoretically it should work, they are pretty much the same trans. But practically, unless you do a lot of reading and know what youre doing I wouldnt attempt it.

I dont know what engine you have but, I've been running a 4r55e behind a SOHC for about 30K+ miles now (I have a SOHC/4r55e combo running off a '95 OHV computer.). I've blown 2 of them up. They arent as strong as the 5r55e.

The tranny came out of a 95 explorer. I don't know what i was thinking when I was at the wrecker, I checked the federal tag and the motor... for some reason I was super confused... Long story short I pulled a trans from the wrecker... The wrong trans. As far as wiring goes... When people swap up for the 5r, they don't have the plugs for the top correct? thus leaving them empty?

Either way the truck is in my buddies garage, he wants it out. I have nothing to drive, and I'm cutting it close to draining my account. (thankfully taking in a load of much needed scrap today). Even if i were to just shove it in, would it last me long enough to find another trans?

Here's what I know:

It will bolt up.
The PRNDL switch is different, but can be swapped between them.
The EPC solenoid is most likely different, but can be swapped.
The TCC solenoid may or may not be the same.
It should work, but I've never done it, so I wont tell you it will work.

I will tell you if it was my only option, I'd put it in and make it work.

I thank you very much, I will post and tell you how it goes if you'd like.

Let us know, it may help someone one day.

Uhm... Up here in Canada we aren't really craigslist people... At least not where I live.. You guys can keep those trannies :icon_rofl:
