Ive got a idea but not sure if it would be worthwhile, I have something in the attic, usually at night. Today while at tsc I saw they have a $75 trail camera, almost bought one but wondered, will it work well enough in the dark? will I have to veiw hours of nothing footage just to see what exactly is crawling around? Then , just what would I do with it afterwards? Ive got 2 live catch traps up there but have yet to catch anything. Im suspecting raccoon, I dont think possums get into a 2nd story attic. Ive got poison I could put out but then youd have a smell that wouldnt go away for a very long time.

I think a lot of trail cams have infrared leds for night vision and motion activation. Just check the list of features.

When I was growing up, one year we got dad to plant popcorn in the garden. After harvesting, we laid the ears of popcorn on cookie sheets in the attic to finish drying. Then found out we had mice when we heard the ears of popcorn rolling in the cookie sheets.

If you knew what exactly was up there it may be easier to bait.

I have a 25 dollar chinese trail cam from amazon in my garage that works perfectly fine. On the lowest sensitivity setting it picks up mice running around in pitch black. :dunno:

Should work fine in the dark if it has the infrared thing.

If it’s a second story attic you need to find their path of entry, and block it. If you suspect they’re in there you can put a ghetto blaster playing heavy metal rock at full volume up in the attic, go outside and try to see where they’re coming out, and figure out their access, so you can foil the squatters. Rent money or GET OUT!

Most trail cams have the ability to take pictures in the dark now. It should say something on the box about infrared or the ability to take pictures at night.

yep, infrared takes shots at night. used it in my garage a few times.
many options, scheduled pics, motion triggered pics, 1 shot, sequence of 3 shots, videos of several selectable lengths,
time date and temp on each pic.

and all that's on my 10 year old camera, newer ones are much better.

know anybody that has a baby monitor? they have night mode to.

I always wondered why babies are so untrusted that they need to be monitored. What are they plotting!?

had squirrels in my attic, i soaked cotton balls in peppermint oil spread thm in attic. half a bag in half a bottle. be careful this stuff is potent, while soaking i had to immediately remove to outside. i used tooo much. but the squirrels kindly left. im going to try putting some under my shed tomorrow to deter the neighborhood cats. my attic still smells strong of peppermint done in spring of 2020, i added insulation after, windy days house smells like peppermint.

We bought a Wyze camera a couple of years ago to answer the question of which dog was ransacking the garbage. It takes continuous video or motion-initiated video. Ours can pan/tilt and has the IR illumination. It can be accessed via WiFi and will send a notification to a phone for motion, noise, etc. if you want it to. And it was cheap enough we could justify it to answer such a meaningless question. I think it was $35.
