traction bars-but with chain.

been thinking of building my own traction bar set up, but with chain. got the bracket made to sit on the top of the axle. just a peice of angle iron drilled to fit the u-bolt. will run a chain forward to the front spring mount with a turnbuckle to tension it. yes i could buy the james duff kit, but i see no reason why i couldnt just build it myself with stuff i already have laying around. any reason why it wouldnt work? not sure how much tention the chain should be under, guess i'll have to play that by ear. the chain will be 1/2 link chain.

You assume (incorrectly) that the traction bar only works under tension
when infact it does exactly half it's job under compression.

yes, that was my thought. ive put it togther but havent tried it out yet. i would think that it would work, guess i'll find out. heres some pics of my setup.

at least if it doesnt work out, i havent wasted but about 20 bucks. the coat-hanger wire midway is just a safety in case something breaks loose. didnt want to drill my front shackle mount so i used a clamp thats used in overhead applications in a factory to hold up water and electrical utilities. i could see the "bar" would use compression in reverse or during heavy braking, but i would think that during forward travel under load tension would be whats going on. i could be wrong, i havent studied up on this stuff. didnt preload my chain much, bout 1 turn with a wrench after hand tighting it up. thanks for your input, AD. i really dont know what to expect from this. its not like i have a severe wheel-hop issue, just once in a while, usually on wet pavement and ive been thinking of doing this for awhile. figured it cant hurt anything to try.

for it to work(under tension), I think your axle mount should be alot taller.

it appears you do not understand the jd overaxle traction bar then. or you are not applying the principals of act-react--and kinetic energy.

changed things a bit, gone is the alumminum turnbuckle and beam clamp. now it's got solid closed eyes and the forward mount goes through the front spring mount and is used to put tension on the chain. seems to be working fine.

that is going to do absolutly nothing. Except look bad, and fight your axle moving back when it tries to compress.
