ok so my starter was getting really weak so i went out and bought a new one, when i was pulling the old starter i noticed that the top bolt was out by about a 1/4 inch. i just thought it worked itself loose, when i put the new starter in and was tightening the top bolt i bottomed it out in the tranny and the bolt was sticking out by about a 1/4 inch.

now this is not the original motor, my thought is that the guy who installed the motor lost the top bolt and replaced it with one that is too long, think im right? or is this the way its supposed to be??

oh yeah its a 91 explorer with the 4.0 and a 5spd

thanks guys!!:icon_twisted:

i have a 91 explorer 4.0 in my 85 bll and the the top bolt does not stick out at all

im just wondering if the wrong bolt got installed and it happens to be too long...

I've run into this before installing an engine I bought off a friend, he didn't have all of the original/right bolts. I just stuck a couple washers on the bolt, and called it done :). More than likely he was just using bolts that "worked", and somehow overlooked that it was sticking 1/4" out.

Yo,
Try that same bolt in the other holes that hold on the starter. It might have a certian one it has to go into.

no it doesnt go in the bottom, the bottom bolt is actually a stud that has a "thingy" (for lack of better word) to hold the battery cables up close to the tranny......

i think that im just going to pull the bolt and buy a bolt that is a little shorter....
