Tool Rental Sources

@JoshT , I do know that AZ’s website lists the rental as a 150#, but when they looked the actual tool was rated higher. I had told them I intended to keep the tool when I had asked (since my local one if I tell them I intend to keep the “rental” tool, they will order me a brand new one), so they said do you want the rental or the one we sell because it’s cheaper? Well, I decided to save money, lol

Thanks guys, looks like I'm G2G on a rental from O'Reilly, the store I stopped at today had a 250 lb one available. Hopefully it'll still be on the shelf when I need it in a few days. No point in renting before the pump I'm replacing arrives.

May call around tomorrow and see if any of the equipment rental places have a bigger one for rent. The 250 lb will work, but if they had a little larger one available, I wouldn't complain. Leverage is a handy thing when trying to hit torque values like that.

Went ahead and rented the Fan removal tool and will try to have the radiator and all out of the way before the pump arrives, hopefully on Saturday.

Honestly, the 150# one my dad gave me, the 250# I bought, and @sgtsandman ’s 300# he let me borrow are all about the same handle length

You haven't seen the ones I have had available at work, but can't carry home to use. Ranged from little 12" lb-in units, up to 4(ish) foot few hundred lb-ft units. I want to say that they had 5-6 foot long unit for torquing some stuff on landing gear, but I never messed with that one. I seem to recall it also being a 1" drive.

The standard 2(ish) foot long handle, 250-300 lb-ft torque wrench would do the job fine. If I can get my hands on a 3+ footer that will hit (not exceed) my needed torque range, I'll take as much leverage as I can get.

Shops at my work have big torque wrenches like that too but we have no need for something that big. The torque wrench Lil Blue Ford is talking about is about 2.5 feet long, maybe 3. Not a monster by any means but bigger than the average bear.

Unfortunately I can't carry one of those home overnight to do the task. Years ago (10+) I might have gotten away with it. Since someone stole a few, was most likely a tool attendant, they've gotten kind of touchy about tools and stuff leaving the installation. They were never supposed to, but now it's more than just a slap on the wrist, it's a firable offense. I mean I could probably get away with it, but it's not worth risking a spot inspection when coming or going. Also these days I hold down a desk instead of proping up a tool box, so be kind of difficult for me to check out the tooling from the PSC.

Oh, there is no "little touchy" with the Air Force. An unaccounted for tool could ground the entire fleet on base. Between what the consolidated took kit program has become and quality assurance enforcement of it, tools go no where outside of work and a name, man number, and location are asigned to it if it isn't in the box or immediate work area.

If they are this way with tools, I hate to see the procedures and process for nuclear material and weapons...

I know well. We tried the CTK thing once, didn't last and they went back to ITKs. Unfortunately they made the switch to CTKs right after I'd gotten my box right, then someone else made sure they got it when they abandoned the program and went back to ITKs. I don't recall exactly what you do, but I'm on the depot side and Robins does things their own way anyway. (I imagine we're about to face the consequences of that too with these budget cuts.)

Process and procedure for nuclear material is probably lax in comparison. How many nuclear broken arrow incidents have there been now? IIRC one of them was lost off the GA coast. (edit: ...and allegedly still there.)

That'd be typical of government or any large business really. Gotta make sure nothing happens to those screwdrivers. Never mind the guys in a white van loading up a nuke.

I'm a Dual Status Technician with the Air National Guard in Aircraft Fuel Systems (I have to maintain a military position to keep my civilian position) on the KC-135.
