Tool box under the hood

I found a place on ebay that's selling ammo cans not too far from me. I'm going to pick some up and update this thread when I figure out how to mount them. I'm even thinking about somehow making them removable (but only from the inside) so I can take my tools somewhere else. Might be hard to do that and still make it secure. We'll see what I come up with.

i made a plywood box with a lock on it that goes behind the drivers seat, (mine is a supercab) pics in my gallery and cardomain. not much room under the hood, and with all the temperature cycling, things could rust easily if not tended to.

My grandpas keeps a bottle of oil stuffed between the finder and the battery on his ford 350 duelly. Depending on the size of your battery, you might be able to work a tool box into your battery mount

get an old steel ammo box and find a place under the hood.

Move ur battery to the bed in a batt box and u'll have plenty of room under the hood. That seems a bit extreme. A pickup box is ur best option. Or just buy a cheap set of tools to keep in ur truck, and leave them in ur bed. I've left my Craftsmen set in the back of my Ranger and no one has ever bothered them. Just rememeber, sometimes the best hiding spot is out in the open.

Just mount a marine battery box to the fenders! Keep the tools in that.

I love my old toolbox. It's hard to beat. My quad fits in the back with the tail gate down, granted I don't have a tail gate anymore but. lol

I like those swinging boxes, but they're way out of my budget. I can't put the ammo can under the hood either, not enough room. As far as moving the battery goes, I think it's easier to put a lock on an ammo can and mount that than it is to move the battery and mount the ammo can under the hood. Ammo can would take up less bed space too.

I really don't want to drive with the quad on the tailgate either if I can avoid it. Plus a big in-bed toolbox seems overkill for what I want to carry. I'll stick with the ammo can idea for now and see what I can do with that.

What about keeping tools inside your center counsole? Mine is a 94 ranger standard cab with a fold down. I store my tools in there?

im saying a panel to cover the "cave" thats were the bed starts to the wheel well. u could use some hinges and a lock to protect it.
and i guess it wont take much space for your ATV.
or u could try on top of the wheel well

Normally I'd agree. Until I had a craftsman toolbox full of tools jacked from the back of my Bronco on Christmas morning, in a CHURCH parking lot after the Candle Light service there. He actually broke into my truck, smashed the glass and everything to steal the tools, not just lifted them from the back of my truck. Then he used my tools to steal my stereo.

I too used to be very trusting, always left my truck unlocked etc. That was the ONE time I ever locked my truck at church and look what happened.

You never figure it'll happen to you until it does. Maybe I just got unlucky, but I'm still out $400 in tools, including some that were my grandfathers (who passed last January) and have sentimental value which can't be replaced.

Just sayin! :D

94twodoor- all of the tools I want to keep in there wouldn't fit in the center console. Plus, mine is broken and will probably come out.

TheTopher- I like that idea, I'll probably go look at Sears to get a better look at the size. I might need two or three though. Once I got together all the tools I want to bring, I filled most of a pretty wide and tall 19" tool box. Plus I already have some coolant, oil, jumper cables, and a few other things behind my seats. It's a possibility though.

Ranger Sport Honduras- I get what you're saying now, but I figure once I made something that fits to my satisfaction, it would have probably been easier to just drill a few holes and bolt some ammo cans in. It's a cool idea, I just think ammo cans are simpler.
