Too Many Axles To Choose From.....

to make things easy on you. find a D30 from a cherokee for the front. 96 -2001 explorer rear axle (those had disc breaks) you will need to flip the spring perches on the explorer axle but then it is a direct bolt in swap (you may need a proportioning valve for the rear brakes).

if you are like me and don't want to use a crappy jeep rejected axle find a HP Dana44 from a big bronco and get it cut down. judging by the questions you ask you are going to need to be supervised when you do your SAS anyways so you might as well get an axle that is common and easy to find and get it cut down to fit.

+1 :icon_thumby:... There is a BB that I keep trying to get from my neighbor, just for the HP D44... About the D30, if you're gonna go that route, it would be a step down from a D35, but it is common and cheap...

D30-Cheap, common... but, weaker than what is stock...
D44- more expensive, but much less likely to break if you're wheeling it...

his truck is true IFS so a solid axle D30 would be a step up from what he has.

i have a 96 rear out of a honda pasport and it is a dana44 no c cilp not a 12 bolt

My bad, I was thinking about the Trooper... Still, an Explorer 8.8" (31spl) is better than a rear 44...

Yeah, your t-case drops on the drivers side, if you get an axle that drops on the passenger side you won't be able to hook the two together... I say just chill out a little and do lots of research, look for a BB D44 to cut down to Ranger width, or find a D30 and do it...

um no the rodeo came with a D44 as early as '93 and they are leaf spring. the gears and carriers are cheaper and more readly advalible. not to mention I would love to see you guys break and 8.8 axle on 33" tires and watch the whole thing walk out, as to the rodeo does NOT use c-clips and also come with disc brakes with a drum parking brake center. cheaper, strong, and safer way out weights stuborn ford parts. horse blinders get you as far as BROKE! just like you cant use TBI springs on a straight axle. tell these guys to actualy wrench and not type, nothing like seeing to believing.

a db 8.8 aint just gonna walk out.

a d44 shaft i will likely bust at the bearing just like i have with some 28/31 spline 8.8's.....what then? ...well you simply put your super cheap stupid easy to find spare shaft in.

d44 in the back for a wheeled rbv is a bad deal....normal us is fine.

8.8 disk brake is bolt in if it has to be and better all the way around and easy to find

I never said anything about the Rodeo not getting the D44, I was thinking about the Troopers, which got an Isuzu/GM corporate 12-bolt... My mistake... Now, being that the Rodeo isn't offered anymore in the US, parts are going to be even harder to find than they were in the first place... I don't know why you are thinking that axle is easier to find parts for... It's not going to be cheaper in the long run, it's not going to be stronger ever, and the only reason you think it's safer is because it's a non c-clip... I've never actually seen an 8.8" lose a wheel (due to axle breakage)... If you are going to break an 8.8" axle shaft the D44 will break first... I don't have any idea where the "TBI" (you mean TTB?) comment came from...

one time i was unloading shingles from my truck onto the top of the bank of the ditch i was in so i could get my truck out of it after the wheel popped off from the shaft busting at the bearin from a turn around mishap....a cop was bustin my balls over it because he thought i was dumping..

in the middle of the fugin road neatly stacking 7 sq of brand new in package shingles so i could get my missing wheel ranger out....

i was close to getting in trouble over the following comments i made to that obseration:annoyed:

HAHAA!!! It seems like cops always suspect the worst in people... I was buying a case of my favorite brew one night when a cop pulls up and starts harrassing me and asking for my ID and everything... This was after I had worked 2-3 hours overtime, and I told him in not so nice words that he wasn't going to be seeing my ID, that it was completely legal and he could talk to the clerk if he had anymore questions... He left me alone, I get that all the time though, because I look nowhere hear my age....

whats a complete gear change cost for an 8.8 rear? and how many after-market axles shafts can you find for an 8.8? Dana 44 (not an isuzu/honda rear, just came out of one) is still one of the cheapest and readily advaible parts. just flip the perches and hook up the brake lines and off I go. simplest and cheapest way for my situation.

Well, from www.car-part.com... I searched for 31 spline 8.8" and got 55 pages of results from $1000 to $100... Searched for the rear axle you are talking about, only got 13 pages of results... The Explorer axle is hands down the more common axle... There were orders of magnitude more Explorers sold than Isuzu's entire model line up... I would much rather try finding an Explorer 8.8" than an Isuzu D44...
