i read in some other thread that some guy actually got better milage on his 88 with the 31's on it??

Didn't correct his spedometer/odometer?

no he didnt
but he said it boosted his gas mileage a little bit
but i have no idea how

You WILL lose millage going to 31s with a small engine like a 2.3, it's not the width so much as the height.
