Tire Carrier

the alcan has gotta better over the years, seen more windshields survive lately....gas is the killer

Yeah gas is the killer. its like 5 Bucks in the only gas station for miles. It would have been a way better trip if we didn't have a town and country towing 10 canoes though. Although I don't think there are a ton of trails in alaska... we only have one that i can think of in town here. I'm hoping to drive it this weekend.

Ahhh.... You need to setup your truck like mine....

84gallons fuel capacity:)

Buy gas in canada? No F'ing way...

Hell, I don't like buying gas in Illinois.

Why not construct a tire carrier using the receiver hitch? It would sit lower and also be removable. Just a thought.

One thing you have to consider is the swing radius. The full width carriers are nice to fit alot of junk on them but in the end you need a bearing block that will support the load, and have the room to swing it open.

not to mention that longer and heavier requires a stronger and more positive latch to keep it in position

Noted. I'm thinking about making it drop down like a tail gate.

I too have thought of this idea. Now you have to consider what you want to run for lift height and tire size?

A 33" tire on a steel wheel does weigh a fair amount. Have you tried to lift one chest height? Not easy for the average Joe. Add in the weight of the carrier itself and you'll be needing a pneumatic arm to help lift it. The only plus I had with this idea is that it would act as a step to get up to a roof rack easier.

Not trying to kill your ideas just to let you know some of the cons that I have found.

Try to keep it simple and light and you'll have no problems.

One of the reasons I went back to the stock setup, just with a few modifications to make it better.

I agree on the tail gate style. Lifting it would be crazy. As for full width my plans are alot more complex than that drawing. For the pivot im gonna use a front spindle off a car which will have plenty of capacity and be smooth. On the other end im thinkin a large diameter bolt with a T handle that will be quick and secure kinda like how those spare tire racks work on desert trucks but alot smaller. also I want to be able to tow with my rack on but i do plan to move the receiver up into that open area with a skinny fog light on each side. That will depend on height though. I was worried about space for opening the back but the way im setting it up is so i can swing it open and have a fold down table on the backside for a cookstove. this truck will basically be a road trippen machine so im planning to build a topper with two fold down bunks and some other cool stuff. im in design mode right now but cant wait to get started this summer when im not at school. but i also need time money and a ranger to put it on.:icon_confused::icon_confused: bummer man.Ill post some more designs after i get stupid finals week over with.

well shit dont come to juneau. haha no trails whatsoever. no fun i hate it here but you should go to haines and me and a few buddies will bring our rangers and we could have a big ranger station event or somethin super awsome... idk. haha well yea if any of you come to the southeast hit me up.

Here is my tire carier of of a 96 blazer... Fit quite well with some help of a grinder. Its a 33x12.5 Interco trexus on it.
