I'm going to be looking at a couple of 2002 Rangers this weekend but I understand there were some problems with the timing chain or tensioner on 2002 4.0's. They each have over 80,000 miles on them but I'd like to know if there's anyway to know if the problems been taken care of already?

Most of the timing chain problems came in the 2001 Rangers with the 4.0 SOHC engine. I have heard of a few 2002 Ranger with the timing chain problem but it seems to be rare. At almost 97,000 miles on my 02, I have not had any problems related to the timing chain. Mine was a very early 02 also. I bought it in Dec of 2001. It had a recall on the rear differential because of the Torsen but no problems with the timing chain.

I have an 02 4.0 that has 125,xxx and I have had no problems yet. Change the fluids, don't drive it too hard and you can't go wrong in my opinion.
