Hello. I’m having an issue that I really hope is not timing chain noise. 2003 4.0 SOHC, 155k miles.
When I cold start my truck, there is zero noise. No rattle no anything. The sound is almost nonexistent when revving in park, inside or outside the cab. But when I start driving, as soon as it hits 2500 rpm, I get a rattle. It goes away immediately after letting off the gas. It doesn’t sound super metallic, more like a bunch of marbles bouncing around. It doesn’t go away as the truck gets hotter, in fact I think it gets a little worse as the truck warms up.
I replaced the rear tensioner because it sounds like it’s coming from the rear of the engine. I put a screwdriver up against the front and rear timing covers and I listened through it while revving, nothing. I figured it might be spark knock so I put higher octane and royal purple in, no luck. Reading OBD2 knock counter doesn’t go up. I’m replacing the knock sensor now but for some reason I’m not hopeful.
I tried to get a video but my phone couldn’t pick the noise up.
If anyone has experienced this same situation, let me know!
