Timing belt tensioner spring

I am in the middle of doing both belts and the water pump I loosen the spring bolt and the spring popped out now I can't get it back under the pins. I tried forcing it under but just don't have enough muscle Im about 1/16" from putting it under the pins but can't do it.
Any suggestions

Take the adjusting bolt out and let the tensioner hang all the way down. Put the spring in, pry on the tensioner, and sneak the bolt back in.
