Thump Thump Thump

I think somebody is messing with my by losing my lugnuts... Same tire went lose like 2 and a half weeks ago... I KNOW i had it tightened down good. The studs are all good. I sure hope it's not my lugnuts being jacked up and slowly backing off.

Are you tightneing them while the truck is resting completely on the ground? Put it up on the jack till the tires touch only enough to keep them from spinning, then get on there and crank them down.

So it was the lug nuts? If so, do I win a prize?
What's your method of torquing them down? I take mine on/off with air, but I always go over all of them afterward by hand with a regular lug wrench. I always go "by feel" rather than trusting the gun to something so important.

Are they against the rim style lugs or are they inset lugnuts? If insets, I'd get new rims that don't require inset lugnuts. They'll constantly back off thereselves.

They are against the rim type. I always torque down by hand. Im going to keep checking them VERY frequently.

Also , and I know its common sense, but do you torque them inthe star pattern? So as to keep the torque evenly ditributed?

check the lug holes they might be damaged an the lug nuts might not be seating properly

Maybe torque'd too much and threads are stretched?

What happend to the OP? Get it worked out yet?

Yeah i got it worked out. And yep the star pattern to keep the torque even. Never heard it called the star pattern. actually never heard a name for it lol but i know what you are talking about. If i have time tomorrow im going to give it all a closer inspection. Probably won't have time during the daylight till friday, but i really don't want to have that wheel come flying off while going down the highway.

You could always drill a hole thru the side of the lug and stud and run a cotter key thru each lug :icon_rofl:

Try torquing them down to 100 ft lbs with a torque wrench... then maybe a light loctite if they back off. Don't use the wrong stuff or you'll have hell getting them off.

locktite? Nah i think ill pass. Really don't want to have a flat and then can't get the tire off... I inspected it all and studs and lugnuts look good. Rim also appears fine... hmmm

I have been driving all kinds of car and trucks for 31 years and have never even had a tire become lose on me...........Aren't you going forward in te car and isn't the lug(stud) have a thread that will tighten up as you go forward?

seriously, they make different types of loctite, some are very mild and removal is easy. Of course, it would be cool to find out why they're getting loose to start with, something isn't right for sure. Try the torque wrench idea to make sure they are tight enough without overtorquing them. Too tight can warp your rotors and make it hell to get them off.
