Thinking about a redesign.

Well, I've been tweeking my design for my sub box a lot while I've been saving up to get them. It's not going too well btw since I keep breaking things on the ranger. If anyone on here wants to sell some equipment cheap I might consider it.

Anyway, back on subject. I've been thinking a lot about my plans for my setup, and I keep wondering if two subs would be overkill? I'm probably going to go with a pair of sony XS-L103P5B's based on price. I would rather go Pioneer, but no place stocks the Pioneer TS-W251R (another cheapy)

What I'm asking here is if two 10 inch subs, probably a pair either of those two, would be overkill right behind me. I'm not looking to blast out my rear window, just add some bass. Don't post telling me cheap subs will sound like ass, I've gotten many replies like that on other forums. I understand this.

If it helps, here's a current design for my setup. It can/will be tweaked for the size of the box needed for whatever sub I get. Your going to need sketchup for it.

It got a little complicated trying to find a site that would let me upload that. No clue if you can upload files on TRS to post.
The two circles on the sides are where the subs would go, and the rectangle in the middle is for the amp, it will be hidden under a vented trap door. Thought that was a pretty cool design feature, and it keeps the back even where that stupid hump is in the floor.

I have an Audiobahn 12" and it kicks a lot. I think 2 10s may be a bit much. I'd rather just get one, and maybe just get one.

Since I don't often carry 4 other people in my truck, I ditched one of my jumpseats, which seems to be pretty common.

Most guys do a nicer job, but I just used MDF and the carpet from the old box meant for 2 12s. The amp is tucked inside the box.

The only issue I have discovered from this setup is that my seat doesn't fold down very far. Luckily that's not an issue all that often though

I'll just take a screen shot of the file and post it up with Photobucket. It's only going to be 2D. But its better than nothing.

The problem with doing this in its current form is its a .skp file, not an image type. (.jpg, .bmp, .gif, etc) Sooo screen shot it is. Need to make it into a .jpg file.

There yah go. It's designed to fit over the hump, and stretch from side to side of the truck. The volume of the box's can be changed by extending or subtracting the central box, where the amp is going to be located.

Looks cool, but I think you may want to think about the placement/angle of the subs. The Ext. cab is really nice for throwing crap in, and you're kind of eliminating with that design, without having stuff falling on your subs.. Just a thought.

Yea, I thought a lot about that. I've been thinking about just rotating the sub boxes to face the seats, that way I could recline my seats as well as put stuff in the back with no worries.

Spent some more time on Sketch Up. And came up with this.

Finished with some subs it should look like this, except with black/silver subs probably. I just used red to offset it and make it stand out.

On thread - I made my center console from 1/2" MDF and placed a Pioneer 10" Sub facing the pass seat with the amp inside the console. I am going to have to move the amp to put the speaker inside the console - when I crank it the speaker hits the seat as it moves. I also configured the console to have two cup holders and three switches. I need to get a leather shift boot and a mounting plate.

Its basically a 3D design program, like Autocad. You can get it free from Google.

I designed using 3/4 mdf, I'll probably use 1/2. Only did 3/4 in the initial design process to show the different panels better. 1/2 was too thin.

I am downloading SU now, want to check it out. I use AutoCAD 2004, a little more in depth than SU, but I have had it for years - so . . . .

I did some work on AutoCAD back when I was taking an architectural class. Loved it. Sketch-up was the next best thing for me since I didn't want to spend any money.

The rated max output is depending on how it's wired. How many ohms are the speakers and how do you have them wired to the amp? What are the specifications for your amplifier?

it depends on the ohm load. if the amps rms @2ohms is 800watts and if you wire 2 subs to achieve the 2ohm load then theyll each get 400watts. thats assuming that amp actually puts out its rated power. cheaper amps usually dont.

New thoughts. Subwoofer grills. I can just put a cover over the facing subs and not have to worry about them getting broken by something getting tossed into the back. I really like these ones, they don't take too much of the view and look nice. Just have to worry about stuff getting in between but I don't have much that could. Circuit City used to carry them, but they no longer do. I'm going to look around until I find the manufacturer and then find them on google.

But, I would also want to recline my seats. I'm going to work on the first design a little more when I get home, after I do up some measurements. I need to clean my truck anyway.. sent it over a ditch the other day and I have stuff all through my cab from the back/floor/etc. Don't keep anything heavy bolted to the back panel, it will rip it off when it gets a large amount of shock.

Well, I had to give up a sub woofer in order to be able to recline one seat. I'll use the other side as a storage area if I go with this design since I'm covering both of my compartment things, and I'll increase the size of of the one sub to 12 inches extending the height of the box to about 20 inches. I need to check that for clearance issues.

I ended up with a pretty cool design to it. Instead of just being flat and whatnot. I like it. I went with the passenger side on the basis of the seat sliding forward so I have more access to the back, and that I can't recline while driving anyway so I could just hop over if I want a nap. Not to mention my tendencies for throwing stuff in my truck is more towards the passenger side.

Here it is covered with some black carpet and with a sub in it. I might glass it, I'm not sure. It would look better that way than carpeted. Hell, maybe I'll bed liner it to keep stuff from sliding around. No clue what that would do to acoustics though. I've never glassed something before either. I'll probably just end up doing carpet.

I'm thinking that instead of cutting handles in I should just screw on some nice faux iron ones. It would stick up, but it would be easyer to grab. Maybe I could cut the hole but put a back on so it's more of an indent, then screw the handle in so it's recessed. I'm not sure what I'll do.


Two Questions:

Is MDF cheaper or more expensive than low grade (1/2") plywood and/or chip board? I might do everything except the sub in the cheaper material. Depending on what it is.

How do you think this setup will sound? I've never heard a sub by its self angled from one cab wall to the other, just one towards the back of the seat.
