They are here to help...

I have similar plans. I figure you either have to hope future tech will always come to your rescue or you better have something that can survive an EMP. No, I'm not a prepper, and yes, I do own several all-tube transceivers. šŸ˜‰
A 300 with points and a manual i would think would live on just fine.

I wonder if you put in a modern radio with Bluetooth if that draws you into the ā€œnet.ā€ I don’t think I have to worry about that with my eight tracks and cassette players…

Any wireless receiver provides an attacker with some amount of attack surface. A new radio in an old truck isn't going to give them much of anything to work with beyond the radio - definitely very easy to track your whereabouts though. A new vehicle with Bluetooth (I imagine they all do now)... Well that could plausibly give an attacker with the right info access to every computer in the vehicle. I'm sure there are a handful of people and or agencies that might be able to do that. However, on new cars, they helpfully offer about 5 other ways to access the computer remotely that are much easier. 😬

And what's being proposed in that article just means they don't want to hide the fact they can already do that anymore. Think of it: they'll be able to adjust everyone's insurance rates down to the penny based on every single acceleration/braking/steering event along with which neighborhoods you visit and which stores you shop at.

I'm going to stop now, I can hear the helicopters.

Best way to keep Big Brother out of your transportation activities . . .

. . . just be nice to your horse, and they won't rat you out.

I'd rather walk, or ride a horse, than own anything newer than 1994 model trucks.

Eh, horses give me hives... and are maintenance pigs.

Maybe you can turn off the sneaky stuff with Forscan :icon_idea:

i bet not. you cannot turn off auto start/stop with forscan on the new rangers

That puts the final nail in the coffin of me buying a new vehicle ever again. After all the integrated electronic crap in the 2014 Escape and the 2019 Ranger, plus having to deal with some of it already, I'm now in Rusty's neck of the woods on vehicles. Maybe not a 70's vintage but definitely nothing with more tech than my 2011 Ranger has.

I agree. The only thing that attracts me to a new vehicle is just the fact that it's new and fresh. There are too many thinhs I don't want to deal with.

To be honest with what I’ve seen with my two ā€˜11 fords. 2011 is too much computers.

My ā€˜11 ranger has 6 or 7 models that all have to communicate together.
I’ve done an auto to manual swap and getting the computers to play nice with the new transmission is the hardest part. I’ll be very surprised if I can get everything to work correctly together without swapping a pcm and instrument cluster from a factory manual truck.

Give me something from the ā€˜90s that is just electronic EFI and the rest is relays and switches.

70s stuff is just way to easy to cobble togther with common household/hardware items. That way when OEs tell the aftermarket to no longer make parts for stuff older then 2025 ill be good
