The tailgate coffee table project

I'm sure the flatter surface will win in the end...but I'm still going to do the test run, if nothing else for a good excuse to get drunk and call it a hobby. :icon_cheers:

I'm kind of thinking I should leave the handle there, and make it DO something....but what? :dunno:

it could operate the automated drink mixer/ice dispenser.

Well I'm going to have a wireless keyboard/mouse for my computer that I was just going to leave on top of the table. But now I'm thinking the handle could pop open a secret compartment on the bottom that holds them. Just my first idea, anyway.

Before I paint the tailgate, I have a fugly yellow filing cabinet I'm going to see about wire wheeling down and spraying black to practice my painting skills on. Any tips?

We'll see how I manage to screw it up and I'll try not to repeat it on the tailgate. :icon_rofl:

This is pretty sweet. Good Luck!

I'll keep an eye out on Local Craigslist ad's for you. I saw a few parts rangers on DE's craigslist but they were 3rd gens I think.

Love the idea! If you could find one i think it'd be awesome to get ahold of a whole bed and chop the back 12 - 18" off tidy it up a bit with a roll pan and use that as the table. Finish the top so its closed off and leave tge handle and gate completely functional. Then you'd have a coffee table/storage trunk and it would look like a ranger is growing out of your floor backwards.

Prolly way nore work than its worth. Either way i would expose the stamped lettering below the panel.

Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas, mate. I'm actually thinking about later down the road getting a super duty bed, or similar sized bed and taking the tailgate off, shrinking it down so it fits snugly around the bench seat couch and making my own truck version of a hot rod couch.

Like this one, kinda.

(I bet gwaii knows what kind of car that is)

Anyway, all that's gonna have to wait 'til I finally get my welder and get a lot better at body work. Still fun to throw ideas around though :)

FYI, a queen size matress fits really really nice in a '97-'03 F-150 6.5' bed. I thought it would be neat to have that sitting on the floor as the bedframe and then the back part of a wrecked cab bolted to the front and use the rear window hole as a headboard to keep my alarm clock and stereo. Wire up the lights for mood lighting if you want. :icon_thumby:

Very good info! all the awesomeness in this thread combined with cracked engine block end tables and crankshaft barstools, i do believe one could fully furnish a house from auto parts. might make your house look like a junk yard but could still be pretty cool

It's not a junk yard if it's intentional! :yahoo:

By the way, your crankshaft barstool DOES involve some sort of seat on the end of it, right? Your current version sounds a little uncomfortable. :icon_rofl:

I'm heading to pick up the tailgate tomorrow morning. Lets hope the guy remembered to bring it home from work for me.

The idea is take a small block v8 crank, bolt a flywheel to it for a base, bolt on number 4 & 8 pistons for foot rests then bolt on a balancer and attach a plain round barstool seat to that. Thats how i see it anyway.
