the one wheel spin of death

Its obvious a 4x4 will ultimately provide better traction, so why argue? It should also be obvious that a locked 2wd will out perform an open 2wd. I say lock it. If you don't have the funds now, save a few more paychecks.

Tried giving rep for this but it wouldnt let me.

X2 A locker would give you power to both wheels at all times.

if you have never set up gears, you'd have to pay someone to do it, its a tedious process... its not cheap to have it done either.

your best bet, if you want a limited slip setup, is to find one and swap the entire axle.. its easier, faster, cheaper... having someone do gears could cost you $400 in labor itself.

find the tech library, find out how to read axle codes on the door sticker and then learn how to read the data tags on the diff cover...

then find a junkyard, find what you want... go for it.
if you want 4.10's-- now would be a good time to do it.

if you have a few fab skills, find a 95 or newer explorer w/ 4.10, Limited slip, disc brakes...and you'd have the stronger axle. 31 spline vs 28 spline.

If you want to "just throw mud" do us all a favor and don't...

I'm not going to get super into it, but people "throwing mud" is what causes trails to be closed, where I live, there are 2 ohv areas, total between the two of them, there is about 1/10th of the trails open that there was 15 years ago, this is because people go in and destroy them for fun...

Now if you want to go and use it responsibly, like others have implied, go get a 4wd, if you need a little more traction for winter, dirt roads, boat launches... Then go get a l/s out of a mustang or explorer... If it is the same gearing, you CAN just swap in the carrier, although your gears won't mesh perfectly unless you properly adjust it... If you want to change gears, you will need to change the pinion, adjust the.... Backlash? That's not right... I forget the term, but adjust the spacing, and you're done, where as if you swap the whole axle, no adjustment needed, 6 u bolts, 2 shock bolts, brake lines, ebrake cable and call it a day... Literally, that swap can be done by anyone who knows how to turn a wrench with even a moderately equipped garage, with no need for precision tools or measuring anything

Sounds good. I think I am going to keep it simple and just swap axle for axle. Short sweet and to the point. I appreciate all the help DEFF going to post my pics tonight when i get off work.

some of what weezl said is good stuff tho...
use it right. treadlightly. don't screw up the sport for everyone. i'm not assuming that you do. just be mature about it. stay off private property and all that jazz..

you know, tread lightly, be legal. good luck.
welcome to TRS, you're in the right place for RBV info.

Unless you have permission of course (which to be honest isn't going to happen a lot)

In some parts of the country we have never even had trails...

what do you mean SOME of the stuff? lol

90% of abuse comes from lack of education as to both environmental consequences and legislated/governmental repercussions. not trying to talk down to anyone, just giving a different point of view

We deal with this behavior in the off-road powersports world all the time. Some idiot rips around off the trail being a jackass and then the whole trail gets shut down. Some retard makes their ATV or dirtbike loud as hell which in turn pisses of the locals and attracts cops and activists.

Behave, act responsible, and enjoy.

Limited slip really doesn't help a whole lot offroad in my experiences. I say save up for a locker, it is well worth it.

if you say limited slip doesn't help much off road, you've apparently never 4x4'd with an open diff

i think this is the first time i've agreed w/ you... :thefinger::icon_rofl:

yeah, LSD is better than open offroad. no doubt.
is it Locker GOOD? no..

My B4000 currently has an open 8.8

Take a L/S offroad and get one rear tire off the ground. It will act strikingly similar to an open diff.
Of course you can ride the brake in attempt to save yourself, but it is still not the same as a locker, providing 100% power to both wheels.

The LockRight isn't really that hard to install. Take the spiders out and install the lockright in their place. done. I have installed 4 and never had to do anything else. Your "other" cheap alternative is to weld the spiders (Lincoln Lock). The Lockright is going to give you better street manners though.
