The Lego Thread... who is into them?

Been getting into them over the last year and a half or so. mostly doing small sets as Legos are expensive... but my sister bought David a big Bowling Alley set that I ended up building. really cool and detailed. finished it up a few weeks ago. will go through the pics that I took of it as I built it.

below are the first few weeks of building. there were 19 bags of legos in the set, I usually did one bag per night to build it.

I've had Lego's since I was but a wee lad... , Haven't played with them much since I got into bigger projects but it comes and goes, still have all my old legos at my moms and have ended up with a fair amount from goodwill and such...

For christmas last year the wife got me a few neat sets of the generic stuff on Amazon, one's a tractor with engine and transmission, other the motorhome from Spaceballs, also have a fastback mustang that has like 2200 pieces, haven't taken the time for that yet, after hunting season on rainy nights I'll get on it...

Almost forgot, for my birthday she got me the vacuum lady from spaceballs and Johnny 5 from Short Circuit... don't have pics of those though...

The generic kits are a hoot, there's all sorts of stuff out there...

I mainly collect Star Wars sets but have kinda been on hiatus lately because of funding.

The knockoff offroad trucks are a lot of fun. Their crude instructions and almost sketch building techniques add to the fun and IMO add more detail than Lego does. More of a challenge too. I have a Bronco and a Defender in all but name.

Also, computer programs are fun too and are cheap. You can download instructions for whatever and build them virtually. Or freestyle, this is a minifgure scale WWII destroyer from a book series that I like (Destroyermen)

Several years ago, I came upon a Lego display in a mall here in Texas. There were several buildings made out of Legos, and this was one of them, but this isn't my photo.

What's the biggest thing you ever built with Legos?

I had to look up the names of these since it's been I think about 13 years at least since I had my old Lego sets out and my kid helped me put them together. The early 90's was the pinnacle of cool Legos, IMO... I didn't get in on the early space theme sets, instead I started with some of the later ones like the Spyrius robot stuff, Aquanauts, Ice Planet, and the Western ones... putting Fort Legorado together on Christmas morning was pretty bad ass. I think I had almost all of the Aquanauts & Spyrius sets, the latter being my all time favorite, just need to track down the lunar launch station set. Wish I had been born a couple years earlier. My cousin had a bunch of the early space and medieval sets. I thought those were so cool. Mid 90's castle theme was awesome...

Seems like Legos changed in the late 90's when I was a teenager. They just seemed less creatively designed, like they ran out of ideas. Legos of today are totally different. Kids don't play with them anymore, they get put together once and that's it. At least that's how my kids do them. The days of having a huge box of loose bricks to build whatever you want are gone.

i had legos back in the 80s and early early 90s but got out of them when we moved to texas and i started surfing. and man, are they expensive now. i had so many legos that they were in one of those plastic kids toy boxes that are for cars and dolls and that kind of toys. i would make planes and cars/trucks just out of random things because i never had the instructions for anything. i love legos because you can build anything you can dream of.

part of a mall in minnesota is made out of legos, the mall of america, i think. i remember going back in 95 right before i went to airborne school while i was in the army and being really impressed with that

Lego sets today are the equivalent of the plastic models I build as a kid...you assemble them once and put it on the shelf.

While the designer have a lot of creativity, and there are some really fancy bricks, they don't foster the imagination of what can you build today..​

My wife and I have about 2 or 3 lego sets unopened in a box. But there is someone that is keeping us from opening them up
