The cast iron thread

Use fresh yeast. I didn't pay attention to the date on my yeast and made some very tasty garlic knot rocks on Christmas day.

:cautious:

I used my 15” pan today to cook a prime rib.

Random observation... An 8.5 lb prime rib is a bit excessive for 2 adults and 1 child.

I got my wife a 13.5" skillet for Christmas. I am looking forward to trying it out.

There was some confusion about it being a snow sled...

Here's my favorite. It was my Granny's. I've always looked for this brand with no success. It's a Good Health brand with the round-ish hole in the handle. I've used everything from Lodge to Emeril, but always come back to Granny.

So I tried out my new dutch oven and made some sharp cheddar beer bread. Beer bread is so easy...

3 cups self rising flour
3 teaspoons sugar
12 oz beer
add whatever else you want ( I choose sharp cheddar tonight)

I did make breakfast casserole in my oval cast iron dish this morning. But I really wanted to share what I think was a good score this week in other kitchen items. In the divorce, my wife kept our old sunbeam mixer, even though it had been my grandma's. So lately, I've been watching for a good kitchenaid mixer on Marketplace. The other day I saw a 6qt professional model listed for $70. Said motor needed work. I messaged for details and they said it would turn about half way, then stop. But the motor kept making noise. I looked up parts availability and decided it was worth a shot to put gears in it. It turns out that one gear, driven by a worm, had a spot with the teeth worn down. It appears to be an older model with a lot of miles on it. So I have ordered most of the bearings, a couple gears, new gearbox seal and some food grade grease. Should be good as new and I'll have the $400 mixer for just $150 total.

Is this what they mean by "clean thoroughly after each use"?

Is that cast iron or cast aluminum? All the ones I've seen are aluminum. Still heavy bastards.

Do you know what the difference between an aluminum frying pan and a iron frying pan is?

One is petty assault, one is attempted murder.
